Warmup (10 mins)

Objective: Warmup - Introduce correct defensive stance and concept of Immediate Pressure (1st Defender)

Duration: 10 Minutes

Description: Passing in Pairs, pass and move. On Coach que, player passes to partner and closes her down (immediate pressure). Jockey/delay for 2-3 seconds then continue Pass and Move.

Coaching Points: Close down space quickly, stop short of attacker and get in correct defensive position: Side-on, knees slightiy bent, weight balanced, eyes on ball. Demonstrate position and jockey/containing technique. NOTE: when first introducing this, partner can hold ball in their hands are walk toward defender, slows things down and allows for more success in learning.

Expanded warmup (15 mins)

Objective: 1v1 to Small Goals, varying angle of approach

Duration: 15 Minutes

Description: Two Fields, 15x20 to Small Goals. Two teams of 6. Play 1v1, with defender serving the ball across to attacker to start each round. Point for Goal and Point for Nutmeg. Keep score.

Coaching Points : Same from Warmup (good defensive shape). Defenders should wait for attacker to make a mistake, and go in for tackle. Keep Score. Progresssion: change starting point of Defender (second field) so they have to consider the angle of approach, aware of protecting the goal as they close down attacker.

Small Sided (20 mins)

Objective: Introduce 2nd Defender (Cover)

Duration: 15 Minutes

Description: Same two fields, play 2v2 to small goals. Keep Score and rotate teams between fields.

Coaching Points: Communicate - 1st Defender "Got ball" with immediate pressure, 2nd Def covers behind. Explain see-saw pattern with the two defenders, as one steps to pressure the other drops and covers behind. Focus on first three Principle of Defense - Pressure, Delay, Cover.

Expanded SmallSided (20 mins)

Objective: Continue work on Pressure/Cover and introduce team compactness

Duration: 20 minutes

Description: Play 4v4 to 4 goals, 25 x 30 Field.

Coaching Points - Defending team stays compact, slides across field with play as a unit. Immediate Pressure from player closest to ball, with cover and balance.

Game/Scrimmage (20 mins)

Objective: Continue to coach Principles of Defense for 1st and 2nd defender in game situation

Duration: 20 minutes

Description: Play 6v6 to Big Goals, 30 x 40 Field 2-3-1 with no Keepers, Players must shoot into corners (cones inside goal) Work with back two defenders (#4, #5) to pressure/cover and talk with other players. Encourage good communication from teammates, and good defensive team shape: compact and moving as a unit. Rotate back two defenders, so all work on pressure/cover.
