Warm-Up (10 mins)

Warm-Up: Efficient Footwork Training

1. Each exercise for 1 minute: Bells, Toe Taps, Pull Back-Push, Side Swipes, Sole Rips, Brazilian Toe Taps, Bell-Bell-Roll, Toe Taps w/ Pull Back, Sole Touch Outside

2. Coach will monitor player success and provide brief feedback to individual players and group when necessary.

3. Players are silent during this warm-up: 100% focus is on their individual touches, and therefore, no communication between players is necessary.

4. Remain in box at all times.

Coaching Points:

1. Master technique first, then increase speed.

2. Body over ball, knees bent, staying on toes, eyes focused on ball = athletic stance

3. Light touches, developing ability to keep ball close to feet and maximize touches.

Exercise 1: 1v1 Attacking (10 mins)

1v1 Defending

1. Defender passes to attacker.

2. Attacker attempts to dribble to endline.

3. Defender closes down and defends attacker.

4. Play stops when defender wins possession or ball goes out of

bounds.

Coaching Points

1. 1st defender applies quick pressure and closes the space.

2. 1st defender slows down when approaching 1st attacker.

3. 1st defender assumes 'surfer' stance with one foot in front of

other in athletic stance.

4. 1st defender angles body to 'push' attacker to one side of field.

5. 1st defender applies 'patient pressure', waiting for the attacker

to make mistake and keeping attacker in front at all times.

Coaching Questions

1. 1st Defender: Where do you want the attacker to go?

2. 1st Defender: How should you angle your body?

3. 1st Defender: Why should you slow down when you get close?

4. 1st Defender: Should you dive in the first chance you have? No, why not?

5. 1st Defender: what could you have done differently there? Why?

Exercise 2: 2v2s (15 mins)

2v2 Defending

1. Defender passes to 1st attacker.

2. 2 attackers combine to cross endline on the dribble.

3. Play is over when cross endline, defender wins possession, or

ball goes out of bounds.

4. Rotate attackers and defenders.

Coaching Points

1. 2nd Defender gives cover to first defender at 45 degree angle.

2. Prepared to intercept pass to 2nd attacker

3. Responsible for tracking supporting attackers who make forward/overlapping runs

Coaching Questions

1. What will you do if the 1st defender gets beat there? Why?

2. At what pace should you close down the space behind the 2nd defender? Why?

3. Why do we want to intercept the pass?

4. What should you do if the 2nd attacker makes an overlapping run? Why?

3v3 Attacking

1. Defenders start in triangle behind coach.

2. Attackers start in triangle formation.

3. Coach starts play by passing to attacking player.

4. Play begins when entry pass from coach is made.

5. When ball goes out of bounds, restart from coach to attacking player.

6. Switch defending/attacking teams every 5 minutes.

Coaching Points

1. 2nd defender gives cover to first defender at 45 degree angle.

2. 2nd defender prepared to intercept pass to 2nd attacker

3. 2nd defender responsible for tracking supporting attackers who make forward/overlapping runs

Coaching questions
