GK Warm up

GK starts set centrally with an open body position.

Service 1 is a tossed ball for a high catch between the mannequins.

On landing, the GK repositions as needed to six yards out, facing server 2 (blue).

The GK throws the ball to server 2's hands, and quickly recovers to his line. Server 2 hits a volley between the mannequins for the save.

Notes - if the GK is not back to his line, he needs to set on the visual cue of the service. If the volley deflects off the mannequin, play it live.

GK takes 4 pairs of services and rotates. Work both sides.

GK Ex1

GK starts set on server 1. Server 1 tosses a hard ball to server 2 - on the release the GK adjusts his position across the goal.

Server 2 is holding a deflection board/rebounder net and is targeting the goal with his service from 8-10 yds centrally.

6-8 services per set each side (2 sets).

On the second set, server 1 can mix up his service, hitting a volley, dropping it to his feet for a cut back cross etc, to keep the GK honest in his positioning and movements.

GK Ex2

GK starts set on server 1. Server 1 crosses the ball - if GK catches, looking to find counter goal on the weak side.

After the cross, GK drops in and sets for service from Server 2 - mostly hard volleys through the mannequins (server has freedom to adjust tempo and type of service to challenge the keeper).

5 serves from A/B/C, both sides.

Functional Ex1

Two part finishing exercise.

Server 1 dribbles from wide and serves a ball in the air, targeting 6-12 yds centrally in front of the mannequins. The three red attackers are looking to finish the cross. When the first ball is dead, the two red players who did not finish/attempt the finish show towards server 2.

Server 2 plays a ball in - the red players have one touch each, and are required to combine between themselves to create a second scoring opportunity (1-2, layoff etc).

2 x sets each side. 2 min work, 1 min rest. (Multiple red attackers/servers can be used, and 2 GKs can rotate every 3-4 reps).

Functional Ex2

Two part finishing exercise.

Server 1 dribbles from wide and serves a ball in the air. The three red attackers are looking to finish the cross, vs two blue defenders. When the first ball is dead, server 2 chips a ball in to a checking red player - they are looking to find a way to finish with their back to goal. They have 5 seconds to engineer a chance (to discourage becoming 3v2 possession).

If GK claims, they can throw to counter goal immediately to work on transition mentality.

2 x sets each side. 2 min work, 1 min rest. (Multiple red attackers/servers can be used, and 2 GKs can rotate every 3-4 reps).

8v8

8 v 8 Game.

Blues defend in Chelsea's deep defending shape - back five + 2 DCM, w/ Mendy in goal.

Reds have a front three, midfield three, and both full backs.

Reds play to the regulation goal, blues can score in either mini goal.

Reds are encouraged to exploit overloads on the flank, looking for wingers to get behind for service, or drop to FB for deeper cross. Both 10's and the weakside winger are looking to get in the box when the ball is in a crossing position.

Blues are working on deep defending shape - compact, picking up runners and having good body shape, making contact in the box.

Play throw ins and goal kicks - corners are a restart from the red holding mid.

3x6 min games. 1.30 rest.
