First Half Match Up

They are numbers up in the middle and +1 in the back. Their 3 defenders versus our 2 forwards. We are +2 in the back since they are playing with 2 forwards. They got a good shot on goal, made it 1-0. Their only danger - kicking it quickly up top to their forwards for counter attacks. We stopped them. Their goal was from the ball not being cleared outside of the box and a girl getting a shot on goal.

We were lucky they did not score more goals due to counter attacks and slow transition. Defensively, we need to anticipate steps ahead and actually be thinking of defensive shape (compact) vs. offensive shape (spread out)

Shaded area: not enough possession in middle third. We rush to score. Not often are we switching the point of attack to catch the other team sleeping. There is not much combination play - controlling possession with 10+ passes before trying to score. Waiting for the right time to penetrate. Getting Players wide and players deep to get the ball to and support. Moving on and off the ball to create space for you and others - mobility. Using skill moves and creativity to score more goals and create more chances. Lost possession of the ball and played defense for the entire first half.

Second Half Formation

Switched to 1-3-4-3 to go for the tie. Helped with the overload of players in the middle because we were also dropping a forward back to help defend. They have 5, we have 4 in the middle - they got the ball more in the middle of the field. Not defending players tight enough caused penetrating passes to their forwards. Adding another attacker, we are able to put more pressure on them and keep the ball in their half for most of the 2nd half.

Second Half Match Up

Still more players in the middle of the field for them, but now we have more pressure up top. Doing this, makes it harder for them to build out of the back and easier for us to steal it and get chances on the goal - which happened and lead to 1-1 in the last minute.

Shaded Area: played in their half most of the game. Back four players (3,5,2) played over the half line a lot. Overlapping runs from Tatiana and Jameson would create even more numbers up situations (3v2's). Keeping the ball on their half and playing good defense on their half created more chances to score and eventually at the end we tied it up. Persistence (never giving up) and consistency (over and over) tied the game. More shots in the second half. Again, because we are playing in front of their 18 yard box.

Attacking Principles

1.) Width (good)

2.) Depth/Support (poor)

3.) Mobility (poor)

4.) Penetration (average)

5.) Creativity (average)

Need to use wall passes, overlaps and third man runs more in order to find penetration behind their back defending line. Keeping possession and switching the ball not only tires your opponent, but it stretches them out and creates passing channels to penetrate and attack easier.

5.) Creativity (average)

Mobility (interchanging positions/players) can overload numbers and create advantages. In the shaded area, either a 3v2 or 5v2 in the corner for a cross, shot, or penetrating pass. Checking into spaces and having a defender follow also can open space for the second person to run into. This gives you space and time - easier to possess the ball.

Depth also means support. As we find the forwards, penetrating passes, pocket balls, we need to get forward and help support up the field. During the game, forwards would get the ball and their only option was to dribble because she did not have many passing options or support. We need to not bunch up, but support the player with the ball to get away from pressure.
