Description

Aim - 4 different 15 minute sessions for 4 different age groups.

Equipment - 1 net of any kind, 8 badminton rackets and 12 shuttlecocks, 10 cones (any colour)

Venue - Lourdes primary school

Client Group - P4, P5, P6 and P7s pupils from Lourdes primary school

Group P4 (15 mins)

Organizational / Instructions

  • Each group has 15 minutes at all 4 stations and rotate after each 15 minutes 
  • This is the badminton station 
  • Each child starts with a racket and a shuttle, palm facing up, players are walking around in the section with the shuttle sitting on the racket 

Coaching Points

  • Keep hand holding racket steady
  • Hold the opposite hand out to help keep balance
  • Keep eye on the shuttle but remember to look up to avoid hitting other people 

Progressions / Adaptations

  • Change to palm facing down 
  • Now try to do keepy ups with the racket and shuttle, (put a target number for children to reach)
  • If players find this easy get them to do keeping it up but alternate between each shot from palm facing up to palm facing down
  • Finally put players into pairs and have work together to practice volleys to and from each other, alternate from forehand to back hand. Have them keep count and pair with the most without dropping the shuttle at the end wins

Group P5 (15 mins)

Organizational / Instructions

  • Each group has 15 minutes at all 4 stations and rotate after each 15 minutes
  • This is the badminton station
  • 3 players on each side of net
  • 2 minute warm up performed using different badminton moves 
  • Players start of throwing the shuttle across to the person opposite them, then they return it using correct badminton techniques

Coaching Points

  • Move into position and get behind the shuttle
  • Raise your Racket Arm and Non-Racket Arm
  • Your body should face sideways with your feet pointing slightly sideways
  • Commence your Forehand Stroke
  • Take the shuttle at the Highest Point possible
  • Complete a Full Arm Swing

Progressions / Adaptations

  • Now have a game with everyone involved, throw 10 shuttles in each side of the net spread out
  • Players must try to throw as many shuttles over as possible in the time given, the team with the least amount in their half at the end wins, play this game 2 or 3 times
  • Finally Have 1 vs 1 rallies across the net with opposite player from you with rackets
  • Make it a competition which pair can get the most shots without dropping the shuttle

Group P6 (15 mins)

Organizational / Instructions

  • Each group has 15 minutes at all 4 stations and rotate after each 15 minutes
  • This is the badminton station
  • Have 3 players on each side
  • Perform a 2 minute warm up using badminton movements
  • In pairs with the player opposite the net, have rallies trying to keep it up (add in competition after a few turns)

Coaching Points

  • Move into position and get behind the shuttle
  • Raise your Racket Arm and Non-Racket Arm
  • Your body should face sideways with your feet pointing slightly sideways
  • Commence your Forehand Stroke
  • Take the shuttle at the Highest Point possible
  • Complete a Full Arm Swing

Progressions / Adaptations

  • One team stands at one baseline while the other team lines up on the opposite baseline 
  • A player from each team steps onto the court
  • One hits the shuttle over the net to the other player, who then hits a return
  • After each player hits to the opposite side, they must run to the end of their team’s line as the next teammate runs onto the court to make a play on the next return
  • The goal is to keep the rally going for as long as possible.
  • To make it harder have players join the opposite line after they hit the shot, still trying to keep the shuttle up

Group P7 (15 mins)

Organizational / Instructions

  • Each group has 15 minutes at all 4 stations and rotate after each 15 minutes
  • This is the badminton station
  • Perform 2 minute warm up with players using badminton movements 
  • In pairs play rallies close together to get used to the racket and shuttle
  • Line up as shown above, player A serves to player B, player B returns to player A then player A plays the shot to player C, once player A hits the shot they run to position B
  • While player A is running player C returns the shot for the next player to move into
  • Player C then runs to the end of the line at A and player B takes position in C
  • The aim is to keep the shuttle off the ground, (everyone must move fast)

Coaching Points

  • Move into position and get behind the shuttle
  • Raise your Racket Arm and Non-Racket Arm
  • Your body should face sideways with your feet pointing slightly sideways
  • Commence your Forehand Stroke
  • Take the shuttle at the Highest Point possible
  • Complete a Full Arm Swing

  • For the last 5 minutes play king of the court
