Objective - Reinforce the use of a lower, wider (A-frame) set in close proximity situations

Intentions

  •  When, why and how to adjust set position based on proximity/situation
  •  Attack the line of the ball at a positive angle
  •  Drive bottom hand low (slide pinky) and extend thru the ball
  •  Angles of support and communication (In possession)

Activation 1 - Handling w/stability (5 mins)

Objective - Encourage use of lower, wider (A-frame) set 

  • 1) GK leaps hurdle and lands on one leg
  • 2) GK takes service on one leg
  • 3) GK leaps forward to set with a foot in each ring (spaced for A frame)
  • 4) GK takes service
Coaching Points
  • A-Frame set - slightly wider, lower than typical set, again when proximity is close
  • Reinforce good handling habits
  • Get low and keep weight forward! Nose to the ball.

Activation 2 - Volley to Negative Step (Low) (5 mins)

Objective - Generate forceful push using negative step from A-frame set

  • 1) GK takes volley from S1, straddling ring
  • 2) GK then makes low ext. save by stepping ball-near foot into the ring
Coaching Points
  • When - Threat of closer range shot (~10 yds but depends on body type/skill set)
  • A-Frame set - slightly wider, lower than typical set, again when proximity is close
  • Negative step - ball-near foot steps inside the line of the body, allows us to get down quicker
  • Turn plant foot to generate maximum force, shoot body and hands low thru ball with power

Objective - Create angles to support the ball and look to break lines

  • 1) GK drops out to receive from LCB
  • 2) GK plays through press to #6
  • 3) GK receives back and plays around press to RCB
  • 4) Pattern rotates - Resting GK becomes GK, GK becomes 6, 6 becomes LCB, LCB becomes resting GK
  • 5) Repeat pattern starting from RCB
Coaching Points
  • Constant communication - ask for it to specific foot, into feet/space
  • Constantly adjust position to make angle
  • Prep touch - don't kill it, get it out of your feet
  • Detail of pass - not bouncing, appropriate pace, delivered to correct foot

Objective - Utilize low (A-frame) set in a game-like environment

  • 1) Forward and set for sweep save from S1
  • 2) Drop set for negative step save from S1
  • 3) Set at cutback position
  • 4) S2 pulls back for shot from S3
  • Adjust - if struggling with neg. step, use the ring for 2) and have them just walk into 2) from 1)
Coaching Points
  • Set low, drop centre of gravity to get down quickly
  • Shoot hands low through the ball - bottom hand extends, top hand secures
  • Keep head and legs down to keep max momentum - GK should slide right thru the ball line
