Session #1 - Jan 13 - 1v1 Attacking
Intention is to focus on 1v1 attacking where defender is in-front of attacker (as opposed to behind, side, or diagonal). From Activation through to SSG, players will be asked to work on Moving with the Ball (Dribbling, Running with the Ball, Turning).
Group size and reps are important with ball mastery/confidence levels. Groups are sized for optimal work:rest ratios to strike balance between physical demands, rests/resets, and adequate reps.
Next session, we will look to progress to 1v1s from different angles.

Setup:
- Yellow cones 5 yards apart
- Blue cones 5 yards from yellow and in line
- Orange cones 5 yards from blue and in line
- Coaching stick centered 5-8 yards away from orange
Progression #1:
- Dribble to first, choice of turn, must be sharp!
- Play 1-2-3 with next person
- Exit via orange
- Dynamic exercise from orange to stick (coaches call out knees, heels, lunge, open/close gates, etc.)
- Return to line via the cone line avoiding others
Progression #2:
- Start on blue line- Touch blue, return to center, play 1-2
- Touch opposite blue, return to center, play 1-2
- Exit w. dynamic exercise same as above
Progression #3:
- Start in center of blue/orange square- Touch orange, return to center, play 1-2
- Touch opposite orange, return to center, play 1-2
- Exit w. dynamic exercise same as above

Setup:
- Setup 15 x 15 yard box with coaching stick or cone in middle of grid
- 1-2 in each corner max (4-8 per grid, can probably fit 4 grides total on fields)
- 2 yard gates centered on outside lines
Activity:- Players in opposite corner dribble towards stick in middle to perform move as provided by coach before starting
- 2-3 mins each move
- Finish exercise with free choice of moves (give them direction to exit so no collisions)
Example moves:
Example Coaching Points:
- Emphasize selling fake
- Distance of engagement
- Using proper part of foot to touch ball to get away from defender with move
- Angle/distance of touch away
- Change of pace/explode after move to end of line

Setup:
- Same 15 x 15 yard box - remove coaching stick
- 1-2 players at each gate max (4-8 per grid, can probably fit 4 grides total on fields)
Activity:
- From one of the marker gates, blue starts a 1v1 attack against red. The aim of the blue is to beat the red and pass the ball to the blue in the gate on the opposite side of the area.
- After giving the pass, you become the defender, similar to the activation activity.
- Defender must always begin confrontation no closer than the imaginary line between their own gates.
- In this progression, the defending in passive pressure only
- Enough to force the opponent to work to beat you but you never need to win ball
Example Coaching Points:
- Gathering information - scanning, head up and down
- Approaching the opponent with changes in speed and direction
- Use different deceptions/tricks to unbalance your opponent
- Be ready to dribble both ways
- Think about distance/timing of engagement

Setup:
- Same 15 x 15 yard box - remove coaching stick
- 1-2 players at each gate max (4-8 per grid, can probably fit 4 grides total on fields)
Activity:
- From one of the marker gates, blue starts a 1v1 attack against red. The aim of the blue is to beat the red and pass the ball to the blue in the gate on the opposite side of the area, who then dribbles onto the court and in turn tries to beat red 1v1 again and pass to the blue on the opposite side.
- After giving the pass, you move from the square to the marker gate to wait for the pass.
- If red wins the ball clearly/it deflects out of grid, the possession changes.
- *Progression for defending session would be to win possession and play to either teammate, but that is for two weeks from now.*
- Defender must always begin confrontation no closer than the imaginary line between their own gates.
Each round lasts up to 15 points, several rounds
Example Coaching Points:
- Aggression/competitiveness
- Gathering information - scanning, head up and down
- Approaching the opponent with changes in speed and direction
- Use different deceptions/tricks to unbalance your opponent
- Be ready to dribble both ways
- Think about distance/timing of engagement

Activation - Continuous 1v1 Tag (5 mins)
Setup:
- 15 x 10 grid
- One corner is a 1 yard gate
- One cone 4 yards in front and 1 yard wide of gate
- Teams of 5-7 players
Activity:
- Attacker must round outside cone before trying to cross opposing line
- Defender must round outside cone before trying to tag attacker
- If Attacker is successful, they then must defend the next attacker
- If Attacker is unsuccessful (tagged, harried out of bounds, or time limit), they must re-touch their outside cone before beginning to defend
--- Next attacker cannot leave until opponent either full crosses line, or is tagged
- Team with 10 successful attacks first wins
--- Lower limit if success is lacking
- Coaching Points: Promote anticipation, directness, change of speed/direction, flair and fun
