Description

Principle & Phase Focus:

In Possession (IP) - Attack Phase - We have the advantage to go forward at speed. Highly Skilled Action: Carrying.

Out of Possession (OOP) - Dictate Phase - Force the opposition into an advantageous position for us. Highly Skilled Action: Marking.

WARM UP: https://www.instagram.com/p/ChC-B-TtBZk/

COACHING POINTS for ball carrying - We are looking for players to carry the ball with control, fast, into space. We're also looking for players to get their eyes up.

Left hand in wristwatch position.

Double V down front of the stick.

Left hand turns the stick.

Loose right hand.

Butt of the stick facing player's belly button.

Ball at 1 o'clock position.

Knees bent.

Head up.

Transfer weight from right to left (forehand to reverse).

Reminder of overall IP and OOP principles:

IP: The best option to go forward and score.

OOP: The best option to stop their go forward and win the ball back.

Quick Ball Carry with Change of Direction

  • Players run with the ball from the start line to the first cone.
  • They return with the ball to the start line and then run to the second cone (still with the ball).
  • They return to the start line and then run to the third cone, and back to the start line.
  • After two practice rounds, turn it into a race.
  • IMPORTANT: Encourage players to turn with the smallest turning circle possible.

Pivoting

  • The receiver stands 3m behind a 3m wide cone goal.
  • They face a teammate who feeds them a ball from 10m away.
  • The receiver runs towards the travelling ball with the intention of receiving and controlling it with their forehand in front of their goal. They don't stand and wait for the ball to reach them.
  • When they get possession of the ball, they dribble it to the left, or to the right, and then with a sudden change of speed and direction they take the ball back to the other cone.
  • Once they reach the second cone they continue running with the ball 2-3m behind the cone goal.
  • Once they have run behind the cones with the ball, they return it to the passer and reset to start once again.
  • 5 turns and players swap places.
COACHING POINTS
  • When changing direction the ball should be moved quickly and independently of the body.
  • The body will be 'dragged along behind' the ball once it has been moved.

The Labyrinth

  • Two players start simultaneously from opposite sides of the playing space.
  • They have to dribble the ball through all 8 goals of the labyrinth.
  • The winner is the player who gets back to their starting point first, with the ball under control.
  • Both players face each other twice.
Objectives:

- To dribble the ball in the most optimum way (forehand or reverse stick).

- Dribble with the head up as much as possible to gather information.

- To change the direction of dribbling according to where the next goal is.

- To find the shortest route, that is, to anticipate their next action.
