Rondos (15 mins)

Rondos

- 4v2 or 5v2 rondos in a 12x12 area

- General, principle based practice linking to our game model of counter-pressing on transition and breaking lines

- Possession team get points for transferring play from one side to the other, split passes and making a set amount of passes

- Defenders can score by winning possession and either dribbling out of the area or passing into the mini goals (to replicate playing out of pressure)

- On transition we're looking for the possession team to counter-press to avoid the defenders scoring and regain possession together

- 6 x 90 second games

Key Points

- Immediate, positive and collective reaction on transition

- Closest player to make contact, teammates to cover, support a cut off ball possessors options

Transition Game 1 (10 mins)

Practice

- General, principle based practice

- 3 team transition game

- 2 teams keep possession, the other presses

- If the pressing team are able to win possession then they immediately swap roles with the team who lost possession, continuous transition game

- The team who're pressing at the end of the game are the losers

- 3 x 2.5 minute games with a 1 minute rest between games (the duration of this practice is small as it progresses into our next practice)

- During the games I'll provide concurrent feedback, during the intervals I'll use Q+A and individualised feedback

Progression(s)

- Add a points system to keep intensity and make competitive as players begin to get tired

- Split main area into 1/4s, references to keep ball in same area on transition, avoid switches of play etc

Key Points

- Immediate, positive and collective reaction to transition

- Hunt the ball down together

- Closest player get pressure on the ball, get the players head down. Make contact, don't just close the ball down - go and win possession

- Teammates to support, cover and cut off the options

- Communication is key!

- Challenge, can we regain possession within 6 seconds? Why? How?

Transition Game 2 (20 mins)

Practice

- Same setup as previous practice, but we've added 4 mini goals

- This time there is a set team pressing for 2 minutes, the other 2 teams are keeping possession

- If the defending team can win possession they can score by either dribbling out of the area for 1 goal or by scoring in the mini goals for 3 goals (to replicate playing out of pressure and bypassing our counter-press)

- The 2 possession teams score by making a set amount of passes

- On transition we're looking for an immediate counter-press to prevent the defenders from scoring

- 6 x 2 minute games with a 1 minute recovery between games

- I'll be using concurrent feedback during the games and Q+A, guided discovery and individual feedback during the breaks, potentially the coaching process too

Progression(s)

- Split the area in 1/2, the defending team get double goals if they can switch the play to the other side before scoring in the mini goals or dribbling out of the area (this is to reinforce not allowing the opposition to switch the play and exploit spaces in other areas)

SSG (20 mins)

SSG

- Pitch setup for 7v7 as seen on diagram

- 2 x 8 min games

Possible Constraints

- 1/2 way line, everyone has to be in opposition half to score - double points if opposition haven't all recovered - to reinforce travelling together

- Pitch split down the middle - reference for avoiding switches of play

Possible scenarios, questions, challenges or considerations during the games

- What if the opposition are able to switch the play?

- Creating an effective rest-defence

- What if we are not in a position to counter-press?

- What if we don't regain possession within 5-6 seconds?

- Upon regaining possession, are we able to attack the oppositions goal?

Key Points

- Communication, especially from the players behind

- Everything together, be together (positioning) - travel together - press together
