Technical drill (15 minutes) (15 mins)

Aim:  Passing - with focus on passing out from the back

(note: arrow lines are example routes only)

Key Factors

  • Technical drill on passing the ball out from the back.

Organisation

  • 14 players split into two teams of 7.
  • 5 balls for each team all starting with the keeper.
  • Aim is to reach player in centre circle in 2/3/4/5/6 (coach to decide) passes without changing positions (so letting the ball do the work).
  • Aim is achieved when the ball is controlled by the player in the centre circle.

Progression

  • Players rotate
  • Limit touches to two or first time passes if players have the ability.

Observation/intervention considerations:

Coaches position outside the practice perimeter moving around it to observe all aspects of technique and practice

  • group/collective feedback

  • individual feedback to outer players

Mechanics

Passing

1. Look at target

2. Eye on ball    3.  Angle of approach    4. Non kicking foot alongside ball in a comfortable position.   5. Strike the centre of the ball with the inside of the foot.    6. Firm ankle.   7. Follow through towards target

Skills drill (15 minutes) (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Transition from technical to skill by the addition of a defender.
  • Player has to make the correct decision to avoid the ball being intercepted.

Organisation

  • One player from the blue and red teams switch to become a defender.

Progression/Adaptation

  • Play with 6 players and add 1,2,3,4 defenders then rotate to allow both teams to attempt.

Observation/intervention considerations:

  • individual interventions during practice
  • if several players are struggling/don't appear to understand - group intervention
  • If players finding it too easy to perform the technique within the opposed environment consider changing the level of opposition or revisiting the technique unopposed.
  • when to swap over GK roles

Small side game (30 minutes) (30 mins)

Key Factors

  • Normal game of 7 v 7

Organisation

  • Split pitch into three horizontal zones.

In play

  • Initially allow free play.
  • Based on observations, introduce condition/challenge
    • Condition - One attacking player only in the final third to make it easier for the defending team to play out from the back
    • Challenge - can as many players as possible get a touch before attempt on goal (without taking away realism)
    • Individual challenge - can striker shoot early (this maintains the pace of the game and put the focus back on passing out and increases repetition of the technical/skill element

Regression

  • All attacking players to retreat
  • 1 defender can move into middle third to support moving the ball up the pitch
  • Striker can move between final and middle third to support
Progression
  • Lift conditions

Swap striker positions to ensure player gets opportunity to execute the aims of the practice (which isn't shooting)
