SET UP

  • Playing area split in half with two end zones at either end.
  • Two teams.
  • Each team starts in their defending half. They are safe here, they cannot be tagged.
  • The aim for each team is to get all of their cones/bibs in their end zone into the opposite end zone.
  • You can tag a player who is carrying a cone/bib. They must freeze if tagged.
  • A teammate can take the cone/bib from them to free the tagged player.

Skill Focus - Slap Hit

  • Q&A
  • When do we want to transfer the ball? (Opposition, congestion)
  • Why do we want to transfer the ball? (Maintain possession, transfer to then move forward)
  • Where are we transferring the ball from/to? (Talk about channels on the pitch)
  • What is the most successful type of pass used to transfer the ball? (Slap hit) - Why? (Accurate and fast).
  • Skill focus - slap hit.
  • Start in pairs, static slap hits.
  • COACHING POINTS
  • Hands together, right meets left at the top of the stick.
  • Stick starts on the ground and finishes on the ground.
  • Stand side on to your partner.
  • Ball is a 'stick and a step' away from your right foot.
  • Bend your knees and get low.

  • Progression -
  • Team up with another pair to form a group of four.
  • Replicate positions on the pitch - Eg. Two full backs, left and right defender.
  • Pass the ball in one direction. Switch players every few rounds so they all get a turn at the long pass.
  • FOCUS -
  • Transfers should be fast and accurate.
  • Stay low to receive and pass, 2-3 touches of the ball.
  • Make sure your body and feet are in a good position to receive and pass - don't have your back to the ball or the player you are going to pass to.

Passing Grid

SET UP

The purpose of this game is to encourage players to think about channels and depth on the pitch, the importance of space, and to stop them crowding together.

  • Split your playing area into a grid, using pitch lines and cones.
  • Two teams, ideally 4-6 per team.
  • One player from each team is inside each box. They must stay in their box.
  • Each team has a ball, starting at opposite sides of the box.
  • Going in the same direction (eg. clockwise), each team must pass their ball to every player on their team, working through each box.
  • When the ball is back with the starting player, they have finished.
  • This practice is unopposed to get players used to moving the ball around the pitch to each other. Each team is focused on their team and their ball only.
  • As your group get to grips with the game, you can progress to add defenders who can intercept the ball (intercept rather than tackle). Start with one or two defenders who can go anywhere, keep at attacking overload.

Game with channels/zones

SET UP

  • End to end game with channels marked out in the centre of the pitch - middle, left, right - plus end zones for each 23.
  • Two players from each team in each zone. If you have more players, you can overload certain zones, or have roaming players who are allowed in multiple zones.
  • Players cannot leave their allocated zone.
  • The aim is to space out on the pitch and look for the best pass, discouraging players from panic passing straight ahead of them.
  • You can add more rules - Eg. You can't be tackled in the right or left channels, encouraging players to pass the ball wide, carry and look up for the best pass.
