Technical Warm Up (10 mins)

Set Up:

  • Use an area 40*40 with players set up as shown in the diagram.
  • Balls start on each end and the group will use two balls at the same time.
  • (Pass 1) Player on the end initiates by playing to the central player who first checks to the ball then drifts away into a pocket of space to receive the first pass. (Pass 1)
  • (Pass 2) The wide player also checks down showing for the ball, once pass 1 is played they will then make a second movement to get higher to receive from the player in the center
  • (Pass 3) After the wide player receives they play to a player on the opposite side
  • Each player follows their pass
Coaching Points:
  • Good technique to pass/receive. Try to receive on back foot, clean firm passes
  • Good timing of movements

7v7 - Possession Game (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Use an area 40*30 with an additional 5 yard channel on each side. There should also be two mini-goals on each endline.
  • Play 7v7 in the middle with 2 neutral players in the wide channels representing wingbacks
  • Teams score by passing into either of the two mini-goals on the endline in the direction they are attacking.
  • Play five rounds of four minutes each round.

Progression :

1. Teams must play at least one wide player before they are allowed to score.

2. Must play both wingbacks before your team can score

Coaching Points:

  • PASSING COMBINATIONS - In possession, players should look to combine.
  • MAKING THE PITCH BIG - The team in possession should look to make the playing area as big as possible, to open up space for other players to receive and play forward.
  • USING OUTSIDE PLAYERS TO CREATE OVERLOADS - Using the outside players can be extremely useful when attempting to retain possession and open up forward passing chances.
  • PLAYING WITH AN OPEN BODY SHAPE - Players should be encouraged to play with an open body when looking to receive the ball. This should increase the chances of receiving the ball on the half-turn and playing forward.
  • FORWARD RUNS - Although the pitch is tight, players should be looking to make forward runs beyond their opponent to receive in advanced areas. This can help the possession team gain territory and play penetrating passes quicker.
  • WIDE ROTATIONS TO CREATE OVERLOADS - The coach should encourage wide rotations to create confusion in the opposition and potentially create wide overloads.

9v6 Conditioned Game (25 mins)

Set Up:

  • Use an area approximately half the pitch to play 9v6
  • The team with 9 includes a goalkeeper, back 3 and 5 midfielders from the 3-5-2. They defend the full size goal on the endline and score in the two mini goals
  • Team of 6 look to win the ball and go directly to goal
  • Play three rounds six minutes each round

Coaching Points:

  • Use different movements to get open to receive the ball
    • #2/3 needs to recognize when to check lower or go higher and potentially when to drift inside although this will be less often
    • #6/8s will need to recognize when to check away/to the ball and when to drift into a pocket of space to allow team to break lines and play forward
    • The three center backs will need to open up and spread the field to at least the width of the penalty area when in possession
  • PLAYING WITH AN OPEN BODY SHAPE - Players should be encouraged to play with an open body when looking to receive the ball. This should increase the chances of receiving the ball on the half-turn and playing forward.
  • RECOGNIZE WHEN TO PLAY FORWARD - Players should be looking to progress and play forward, no need to keep the ball just to keep the ball even though we are a possession based team. Especially for the wide players after a switch of play
