Warm Up

This Session works off the ball movement/3rd man runs, communication, (width, support (depth & angles of support), penetration, mobility, improvisation) the ability to play backwards to the keeper in order to maintain possession, diagonal and straight passes, 1-2 passes,

Organization: 6 Players per grid. 2 Target Men, 2 of one team, 2 of another. If numbers are uneven, then a 7th nuetral player can be added that plays with possession.

Instructions: Players must work the ball from end to end to score points.

Coaching Points:

1) Back foot receiving.

2) Positive touch.

3) First look should be forward.

4) Move the ball quickly to avoid pressure.

5) Quality, weight, speed and accuracey of passes.

6) Constant clever movement to loose defenders and open passing lanes.

7) Good support.

8) Defenders try to deny central penetration.

Organization: 2 grids as above. Grids must be far enough apart that they do not interfere with eachother when the drill is reversed.

Instructions: Player A takes a touch and Players B & C move accordingly. Player A passes to Player B who passes to Player C. Players C shoots at goal and joins the next line getting his ball from the GK.

Coaching Points:

1) Talk about field positioning, where to receive the ball (high or low) to allow penetration or a pass back but not too far up as to allow the interception, depending upon the positioning of the defender.

2) Try to adjust body to open up, face forward and allow a back foot receipt of the ball and be able to play forward.

3) Talk about the pros & cons of front & back foot receiving & passing & when and where they are likely to be done based on pressure from a defender.

Players A, B & C must all communicate and open up passing lanes.

4) Passes must be played quick enough to allow player to escape the defender, too slow and it puts the receiver under pressure. Passes should eventually be so quick that they can draw defenders out of position.

5) Talk about passing lanes.

6) Talk about the combination play after the initial passes.

Talk about weight, accuracey and type of pass and where to play the pass depending upon positioning of the defender and also upon where you are trying to send the receiving player.

7) Body shape

8) Talk about why players use full width instead of standing in a line.

9) Player C must be mobile to move into passing lanes if B receives under some pressure.

Organization: A PASSIVE DEFENDER IS NOW ADDED WHO CAN BLOCK PASSES BUT NOT TACKLE. 2 grids as above. Grids must be far enough apart that they do not interfere with eachother when the drill is reversed.

Instructions: Player A takes a touch and Players B & C move accordingly. PLAYER A NOW PASSES WHERE THEY LIKE, AS ABOVE.

Conditioned Game.

Organization: 25x40 Grid. 7 gates. 4v4/5v5 plus a neatral player with possession.

Instructions: Players must pass through a gate and successfully control it the other side of the gate before they can then go on to score in the regular goals. The game is reset once a team loses possession.

Coaching Points:

1) When in possession, ensure your team creates space as a team, both wide and long to make the pitch as big as possible.

2) Players thinking “one step ahead”, not where the ball is, but where it is going to be.

3) As the ball moves, the players should constantly be moving to find and create space (create passing windows left and right)

4) Always more than one passing option of a player in space for the player on the ball.

5) Communication between players

6) Quality of passing to feet, space, first time passing or pass and control?

7) Runs to create space for other players

8) Movement to create 2v1 situations.

9) Overall point of the game is to create numerical advantages in the open areas (Passer passes to an open receiver then this receiver must now have another receiver to pass to the other side of the gate).

Progressions: Progresses into regular game.
