Structuring a practice 1: Retain possession

Organisation
Playing 6 v 4 (can be adjusted to 7 v 3 if proving too difficult)
Objective:
Can the red team retain possession of the ball?
Coaching points:
- Communication
- Checking your shoulder to paint pictures / make decisions
- Accuracy of pass
- Weight of pass
- Type of pass
- Movement to receive
- First touch out of feet and into space
- Keep your head up and look to move the ball into space away from the defenders into the area where there is space

Organisation
30 X 20m area, with two mini goals as shown
5 v 5
Blue team: 2 players on touchline who can run anywhere along the line but not enter the area. They are unopposed and cannot be tackled by an red player. The remaining 3 players are in the area.
Red team: 5 players all in the area.
Rules:
Blue team to retain possession using the wide / unopposed players. Every 5 passes made you get a point.
Red team have to win possession of the ball. If they do, they become a 5 v 3 and can score in any goal. No points if a goal is not scored and / or you are tackled.
After about 7 minutes, rotate the teams and the challenges.

Objective:
Passing the ball with tempo
- Players with the ball: look to dribble the ball until a player without the ball asks for the ball to be passed to them
- Players without the ball: keep moving and scanning to see where the player with a ball is and look to receive it from them
