Hockey Session Plan Drill (Colour): Warm up

Warm up (10 mins)

Passing (3 teams of 5 players each)

P1 carries ball to middle, rounds cone and passes square to P2 (who calls SQUARE)

After passing, passive defending so that P2 must use elimination skill

P2 carries ball past centre cone, passes to P3

P2 follows pass, creates passive tackle for P3 to use elimination skill

Repeat

Progressions:

Use lifted ball as pass

Use reverse paddle pass (will go around middle cone on reverse)

Group 1 (15 mins)

5v5 continuous play

Team A v Team B with Team C waiting to play

Coach passes ball to first player to call and lead to become attacking team shooting at goal

Defending team needs to get the ball back to Team C to become the attackers towards goal. Other team defends

After 3 goals/turnovers, bring Team C into the game to replace Team A

FOCUS: high intensity play with loads of passes and running to create space

Encourage shots at goal, help goalkeeper to participate in game (they can score by clearing ball to coach or to waiting teams in squares

Coach players about how to create space and explain that they may not get the ball every time

Group 2 (15 mins)

Ball protection skills (2v1)

Groups of 4-5

D passes ball to A1 then follows pass to put passive tackle on A1

A1 carries ball to D turns to protect ball and drop-passes to A2

This activates D to 100% defence vs A1&A2 who try to score in either goal

If D wins the ball, they need to drive through either opposite gate

A3 starts next round with one players sitting the round out

Defenders rotate in and change with As after defending 5 rounds

Focus is on turning away from defender to protect the ball, knees bent, lower right hand on stick

Focus on driving with ball into space and maximmising numbers advantage

Defensive Focus on tackling and correct body position to channel and isolate attackers to a 1v1, also turnover change of speed to counter

Progression: Advance to 2v2 with same themes, but D2 activated after pass to A2 to create 2v2

Make playing area bigger

Group 3 (15 mins)

Group 3

3v3 to start the game

Players need to carry the ball into the End Zone to score

Once they score, they release a team member and go numbers up

They then turn and attack the opposite End Zone as a team

Team to get all numbers on the pitch first, wins the game

Restart with those who came one last

Focus:

Using the space and numbers, especially when players up

Ask players to think and share about how to attack/defend more successfully

Game 1

Turnover game 7v7 (if extra player, use as JOKER player)

Game 2

8v8 with various conditions

1. Can score through 3 goals and then turn to attack other goals etc etc

2. Have to pass 5 passes before they can score

3. Have to create backline transfer before they can score
