Starting Positions

Starting Positions -

- Right Back(RB) & Left Back(LB) primary job is to defend the wings and provide support. When we are attacking they should move forward into the middle third and even up into the offensive third to support the wings and midfielders and join the attack.

- Center Back(CB) should stay the deepest to provide support to the Right & Left Back and Defensive Center Mid. CB play almost entirely in the defensive and middle thirds.

- Defensive Center Mid (DCM) will play mostly in the middle of the field in all three zones with emphasis on supporting the attacking players and helping on defense. Should stay behind the OCM.

- Center Attacking Mid (CAM) will play mostly in the middle of the field in all three zones with emphasis on attacking. Should stay higher than the DCM.

- Left & Right Wings (LW/RW) will play almost entirely in the wide areas of the Middle and Offensive thirds of the field.

- Forward will play almost entirely in the offensive half, coming back somewhat when we are defending to provide an outlet when we recover the ball.

Attacking Posture

Typical attacking posture - Look at all the options that the 10 has going forward, to the side or backwards!

Notice how the 2 has pushed more forward to help support the attack and because of that the 3 is hanging back just a bit further and more towards the middle to help the 4 if we happen to lose the ball and the other team attackes quickly (counter attack).

Notice how far out the GK is! She can come out and use her feet to clear away any long balls played in behind the 4 to prevent a quick 1v1.

Building Through Middle 1/3rd

Building up through the midfield in the middle third -

Notice how spread out we are with tons of options to go wide, forward, diagonal or even back if need be. We look for the 6 to start the build up from the back. The preference would be to make a penetrating pass to the 10, 7, 11 or 9 and be more attacking minded.

Notice where the GK is. Playing to the GK's feet is even a good option for the 4 if needed. (GK can not pick up the ball with her hands if passed back from a teammate, but can use her feet to pass to the 2, 3, 4 or 6 or just boot it away if needed)

Defensive Posture

Typical defensive posture -

Notice how compact and central we are! Pushing and inviting the other team to go wide, furthest away from our own goal.

Notice how the backs are pretty much in line. The 4 isn't dropped off behind them becasue we are so close to our own goal and becasue there is offsides we prevent the other teams players from getting in behind us and keep them pushed further away from our goal.

Notice how the 6 & 10 are not even with each other! The 6 is slightly behind and to the middle of the 10. This is called "Cover". This way if the 10 gets beat the 6 can then step up and pressure the ball.

Notice how the Forward is still up high, but ready to come back and get any balls cleared out of the defensive third of the field.

Def Posture - Wings

Same as last, but from the wing -

Notice how everyone, including the 9 and GK have shifted to the right side where the attack is coming from!

Now the 7 is applying the pressure and the 2 and 6 are providing "cover".

10 slides back further becasue the 6 has been pulled forward to help with the cover.

11 stays a bit higher and in space so that she is a quick option for a fast counter-attack if we recover the ball.

The 9 should be ready to run onto a long pass into space down the line if we recover the ball.
