Warm Up (10 mins)

Description :

> 30x30 area.

> 2 even number teams. ( 4v4,5v5,6v6)

> 1 ball in the game.

> teams will play a game of handball.

> players cannot run when they have the ball in their hands.

> players off the ball must always be moving into space to give player on ball an option.

Progression :

> handball a good way to allow players to be aware of movement & space when not on the ball.

> players must communicate & always be on the move.

> encourage the players not to hold onto the ball too long or they will get closed down quickly.

> remind players that handball is similar to soccer but with ball in our hands.

> players still move into space, communicate & move ball quickly like they would in soccer.

Why should we always be on the move & looking for space?

What should we do to let player know we want the ball?

How do we create space for ourself?

Why do we move the ball quickly?

Activity 1 (15 mins)

Description :

> 30x30 area.

> into pairs.

> 1 ball each pair.

> place gates on field, coach decides depending on numbers.

> players must work together to pass & move around the area.

> players must pass through as many gates as they can.

> one player must receive a pass on the other side of the gate from their partner.

> get players to communicate so they can decide what gate they will be passing through.

Progression :

> look to make gates smaller.

> challenge players & let them try to pass with their less preferred foot.

> encourage players to pass with inside of their foot.

> players can use verbal & non verbal communication to show partner when & where they want the ball.

> look for players to receive pass with inside of their back foot to allow them to take a postive touch & head into a different direction.

Can we communicate & work with our partner?

Why do we need to move off the ball?

What weight of pass should we have?

What do we do with our head? Do we only look at our partner or do we check our shoulders?

Who else do we need to be aware of?

Activity 2 (15 mins)

Description :

> 30x30 area.

> 5x5 boxes in corners.

> 4v4, 5v5, 6v6 - depending on numbers.

> possession styled drill.

> players must keep possession between their team inside the area.

> supporting players must make runs into one of their 2 boxes to receive pass from player on ball.

> players have option of 2 boxes in opposite corners, allows them to make game bigger & wider.

> if player takes his first touch inside small box then team gain a point.

> if team gain a point then the opposition start with the ball.

Progression :

> look to add 5 passes to gain a point so players can learn to be patient on the ball.

> if players start to get use to & comfortbale with the drill then we can look to make possession area smaller to challenge players more & get them moving ball quicker.

> also can look to make the corner box smaller to allow player to focus more on the direction of their pass & the weight of their pass.

> encourage players to communicate both verbally & non verbally to let teammate know when & where they want the ball.

> inform players they do not need to force the ball into a box, they can keep the possession inside the field until a box pass is on.

Can we be patient on the ball & not force it forward?

How do we let our teammate know we want the ball?

Why do we need to always be on the move?

When should we be asking for the ball?

What body part do we check to see where defenders are?

Game (30 mins)

9v9 Game.

our end game should try to incoporate what we have worked on during the session, make sure to ask players questions to let them work it out for themselves rather than us telling them what to do :
