Defending in the middle third
Phase of play: Ball recovery
Game model: Density in the direct game channel (defending in the midzone)
Principles:
Pressure, cover, balance,
Compactness within and between lines
Defending inside to out
Cover shadow - keeping a player within it (being able to press while simultaneously taking away passing lane)
Technical gestures: angle and speed of approach, body profiling, defensive body shape, 1v1 defending
Perceptual references: ball/goal, teammate/space, opponent (opponent body shape)
Tactical situations:
CF is unable to get pressure on the ball and so a ACM comes out of midfield to deny penetration of the CB (ala Cheslea 2018/2019)
Interior midfielder comes out of MF to put pressure on the ball/CB
Forces outside while at the same time taking away CM he just left
Both OMs tuck and reduce the space between them and other 2 CMs
Shape looks for a spell as 4-4-2 with a compact midfield line of 4
Players play zonal in center of midfield and account for possible 2v3 situation with compactness with one another, trying to delay, and force opposition into wide areas, and areas where we have numbers
