DEFENDING PRINCIPALS

KEY COACHING POINTS:

5 Defendsive principals

Delay - is the defense’s ability to slow down an offense to disrupt the pace and/or numerical advantage of an attack.

Depth - Depth is a defense’s placement on the field -- too deep and there is too much space for an offense to hold the ball in front of them, too shallow and there is too much space for an offense to get behind.

Balance - refers to a defense’s strength all over the field, not just those directly defending the ball.

Concentration - is a defense’s focus, which is critical to avoid simple mistakes like miskicks that can give opponents undeserved opportunities.

Composure/discipline/patience - is an intangible that an entire team must possess to maintain defensive shape and the other four principles even while under constant pressure.

Defending Principles

1. Player on this side of the pitch play the ball into opposing player (focus on quality of passing)

- Defensive principles include getting out to the player quickly

- Side on

- Low and bent knees

- Jockying

(very important that defensive princples are also upheld as this will improve the quality of attacking coaching and performance)

2. Players at this side recieve the ball and immediety move out and attack the large goal (4 players working at a time)

- be direct

- use effective dribbling technique

- Space or oppertunity opens up they are to shoot

- use of skill and dribbling technique is encouraged and rewarded with praise

(keeper to be in net, will help with development as will have 2 stimuli to deal with in both players and his positioning and possible both balls at one time)

its a race to the ball and then to try to score.

First player to ball can they obstruct the other player from getting in front and get a shot off.

Run across other player to slow them down or draw the foul.

Shield ball from other player - clever play - use of skills to beat oppo and GK.

If youre second to ball how can you get it back without fouling oppo?

Recieving back to goal - 1v1 (15 mins)

Receiving with back to goal:

The ball is played in from the centre to the striker where the striker then looks to turn with the ball and score. However this is an opposed dril so there is always a defender on the strikers back. To begin with the defender is not active and cannot tackle the striker until they have taken their first touch.

Coaching points:

First touch

Body shape

Decision making - 1 touch away from the defender and then shoot or possibly hold up the ball and take the defender on in a 1v1 situation.

Challenge:

Can we let the ball roll across our body and then take our touch or even shoot first time?

Limited time before you can shoot, create a more pressured situation.

Limited touches on the ball.

Can we hit one off the targets in the bottom corners off the goal for 2 points?

Defender is active as soon as the ball is played.

Progression:

The player who just passed the balll in can now join the striker to create a 2v1 situation. Alternatively the player starting with the ball can dribble with the ball to start off with, here we would be looking for the strikers movement off the ball to recieve.

Coaching points:

Communication between the midfielder and striker.

Movement on and off the ball.

Decision making - Take on the 1v1 or pass the ball away?
