Activity 1 (10 mins)

Coach starts the practice with a Q&A:

1) What different types of catches are there and can you show me?

As the player explains and demonstrates correct any bad habits that appear.

2) Ensure goalkeeper discusses, 'W', basket and scoop. This can be guided by using the question 'What if the ball was this height?'

Allow the goalkeeper to demonstrate and practice a variety of handling techniques by starting on the goal line, moving forward to the cones and using the correct technique. If at any point the keeper uses the wrong techniqe, question rather than tell them where they went wrong.

Activity 2 (20 mins)

Introduce a competitive element to the practice with a 1 v 1 activity.

Players stand 10 yards apart in 5 yard gates. (Can be modified based on age and ability).

One player "bowls" at the other with the aim of testing different handling techniques each time. Each successful catch is a point to that player. The bowling player is not allowed more than one bounce, other than when the ball is rolled, or any "wides" (similar to cricket). This introduces a varied style of service and allows the GK to make his/her own decisions.

Progressions

Goalkeeper must face away from server until he hears a command to turn. Improves speed of desicion making.

Closer distance

Third server with middle keeper working.

Focus minutes on a particular type of catch. Poor service can result in points taken off.

SSG (20 mins)

Position the goalkeeper in a small 4x4yard box in the centre of the pitch. The box should be small enough that the outfield players have to be accurate with their service so as not to make the goalkeeper dive, but focus on handling instead.

Two teams play each other as normal but score by playing the ball into the goalkeeper to make a successful catch. When a team scores, the goalkeeper plays the ball back out to the same team.

Possible progressions

Team must play to keeper after 5 passes

Bigger/smaller outfield area

More points for W catches, basket catches or scoop catches depending what needs to be developed
