Warm up (10 mins)

Begin with some stretches for the arms, legs and back using the ball where possible

Work with the hands for reactions and hand eye coordination

  • 2 touch no bounce (with hands only then progress to no hands) looking to use the mannequin for more of challenge)
  • 4 high catches (2 on each side back to back) done quickly to get moving and blood pumping (2 or 3 sets of this)
  • Volley to keeper to a make W save (Progress to face the other way then turn round & make the save)
  • W save side-shuffle to other side for scoop save

Cut back & save (10 mins)

Low dive to stop the cut back, get back up to centre and save the shot at goal


Coaching Points:

  • Quick feet movement to get in line with the ball
  • Be set for the shot
  • Step across into low dive to stop the cut back
  • Decision making what type of save is needed?

One touch pass and then a shot at goal from angle (4 times then swap keepers, 2 sets then swap sides of shot)

Coaching Points:

  • Light on feet for the pass and then movement to get set for shot
  • Cover front post 
  • Stay up as late as possible to judge ball flight

Reaction saves (10 mins)

Keeper stand infront of each other and are numbered 1 or 2 

A ball is played to the coach and the coach calls a number and that numbered keeper has to make the save 


Coaching Points:

  • Set position
  • Judge the flight of the ball
  • Stand up as late as possible
  • Make the save how? it doesn't matter stop the shot going into the goal

Saving with the feet (10 mins)

The exercise is aimed for the keeper practice saving with their feet for a low angled shots at are close the body.

Progression:

  • Look into how the K-save can be used to prevent from being scored across goal.
  • A shot from the centre and quick recovery to the side for a low angled shot to save with the feet.
  • The shot will be taken at goal aiming for either near or far post now.

Coaching Points:

  • Become as big as possible.
  • Drop the knee into a K shape but not to the floor.
  • Keeper should be looking to have at least 1 hand to try and stop the shot if it goes above the leg.
