Warm up (15 mins)

Pressuring as a unit and maintaining defensive stability

Progressions

1. Individual Pressure, ball in from feeder, defender shadows and no contact

2. Individual Pressure, ball in from feeder, defender applies physical pressure but no tackling

3. Ball in from feeder, work as a unit to get the ball past the defending team and pass the ball to the opositions feeder. (Offside rule in play).

4, Once the ball is passed in the attacking teams feeder can recover to try and help out the defenders (this will simulate a recovering midfielder)

Work with specific individuals (1-2-1 coaching about body shape, not diving in, forcing them wide ect..)

Coaching Points

Principles of Defence - Press, Delay, Cover & Balance, Compactness, Control and Restraint (Interception, Pressing, Marking, Covering)

Attack v Defence (SSG) (40 mins)

Attack v Defence

Aim: To delay the attackers as long as possible, stay compact and dont dive in (try and wait for the mistakes)

Set up

Defence (the team i am coaching) Blue

1 x GK

4 x Defenders

2 x Holding Midfield

Attack (Red)

2 x Strikers

4 x Midfielders

Ball is initially fed out from the GK, to any of the attacking teams midfielders and the game is played on from there. (we will have different staring positions as well to make it match realistic) The blues aim is to try and slow the game down as much as possible and if possible win the ball back by blocking passing lines, playing offside and keeping their shape (like table football), once the blues win the ball back then they have to try and score a goal on the halfway line (the goal will only count if two players are in the shaded area) this will act like the defenders or midfielders are passing the ball to number 9 or 10.

If the ball goes out for a corner then a corner is taken (this needs to be as close to a real game as poss)

Specific Coaching Points

Midfielders need to stay central and force the ball wide

Defensive Compactness (distance between them)

Blocking passing lines

Press the ball quickly, stay claim and don't dive in

Moving Across as a unit

360 Awareness

Communication

Phases of play / pictures 1

One phase of play will be forcing the attackers wide. The full back (3) closing down the ball quickly but then stands off so then the player with the ball needs to make a decision (body shape is very important at this stage and the defender needs to show them the outside and try to delay them). During this both CB's & RB (5,6 & 2) will shuffle to the left so that the distant between all the defenders is similar (around 7 mtrs - like table football). During this the RB and CB's need to be aware of the attackers so their body shape is also important.

Remember triggers for the LB, CB's & RB's

Another picture to be seen will be the recovery runs from the midfielders to get back into position, (need to look at the angle of the run and the reason why?)

Phases of play / pictures 2

This phase of play could be if the attacking team decide to attack centrally with a quick ball into the attackers number 9's feet which is then passed back to the attacking midfielder. The defensive unit need to then play very compact (around 5 mtrs between them) and leave room on the outside so that the attackers then change their mind and try to attack via the wing - this will allow suitable time for the midfielders to recover back into their position so that their can win the ball back. Need to look at the angle of the midfielders recovery run (which will allow room on the wings so its an easier decision for the attackers to play the ball wide), the body shape of the defenders (need to be full aware of other players)

Remember triggers for the LB, CB's & RB
