4-2-3-1 Build-up Play Plan B: Positioning to Break Pressure v 3-man front
Setup: 10v9 Build-up play to half line (10 Blue in possession) v 9 Yellow
-Goalkeeper is the free man. All other players must create space and rotate to create options
-"Dumpzones" are in RED (if needed, play the ball there and press for 2nd ball)
-Start with goal kick for Blue, GK passes to CB. This strong side CB now sets the framework for CM supporting angles below.
Center mids: each on their own line in a different passing angle/lane.
1. Strong HCM sets outside angle positioned outside the window, looking to turn and penetrate
2. Weakside HCM comes underneath to support, looking to draw pressure and creating 2v1 v opposing winger
3. ACM creates space to receive in weakside attacking pocket. Intent is to receive with space and penetrate or to receive layoff from F.
4. Forward in same vertical channel as CB with ball (unless CB drives into halfspace - then Winger checks into half space to be tip of diamond).
Passing Options:
1. Circulate ball with confidence and quickness, see small rondos find free man who has space to turn/penetrate.
2. 3rd line passes: Skip a supporting line by passing to the Forward who holds up, turns or lays off to ACM. Or skip a line and play ball into Winger who checks into the half space to hold up, turn or lay off to CM, strong Fullback or F.
3. Play aerial ball to Forward or Winger who flicks ball upfield to timed run by Forward/Winger/ACM.
Principles:
1. Positioning - don't duplicate same space as teammate. Control the whole space.
2. Angles - All players except for GK must have two attacking angles and one negative passing angle.
3. Scanning, scanning, scanning - away from the ball and behind you before you receive.
4. Timing - Delay your supporting run unless you are attempting to distract/disorganize or to draw your marker out of a their space for a teammate to exploit.
5. Defensive transition - loss of possession? Immediate, relentless pressure. Win ball within 4 passes.
6. Fullbacks receive far foot, turn and provoke opponent (even if you have to eventually go backward).
