Turnover (30 mins)
TURNOVER
3 x Attackers
2 x Defenders
A1 & D1 start in line with the double cone (red line).
When A3 shouts "GO" both players must sprint to the 25 yard line & turn. At this time A3 pushes the ball ahead of these 2 players for them to contest fairly.
A1 is trying to win the ball to be able to bring A2 into the game so that they can go forward towards the goal and combine with A3 vs. D1 & D2.
D1 is trying to win the ball and get it into the yellow cone box to score the defenders a goal. As soon as the defender gets it into the yellow cone area they must leave the ball for A1 to pick it up and pass to A2 so that they can launch an attack immediately and the defenders must defend.
KEY POINTS FOR ATTACKERS
1. Shaving & Stealing defending techniques to win the ball - encourage legal physical pressure to win the ball
2. As soon as the ball is won, look at bringing in A2 from the next line (GUARD PLAYER) to create an immediate 2 v 1 on D1. This should be a LATERAL pass to create a better attacking option.
3. Off the ball leading / decision making must draw the defenders apart so that Attackers can use their number advantage. Always consider the PASSING LINE options of the ball carrier that makes it easier for them to service in a simple and effective way.
KEY POINTS FOR DEFENDERS
Defenders also need to look at ways to protect the ball from attackers running back to steal / shave the ball. They need to look at:
1. Using their body to protect the ball e.g. carry the ball in a position that places your body between ball and attacker
2. Look at finding ways to create a free hit if the defender comes under pressure so that the defender can take a quick self pass if a free hit is won to get away from the pressure.
3. If the ball is lost, make sue the deep defender (D2) COMMUNICATES the preferred line for D1 to take up so that together they can delay and force the attackers away from any threatening line to the goal
PROGRESSION:
Add extra defender on the same line as A2
Expand the drill by taking away the red cones and combining all 3 channels together - game scenario - attackers & midfielders vs. defenders & extra midfielders / strikers in the squad
