Function (15 mins)

Set-up

Cone off area of pitch as shown.

Attacking team play with 6 players (2 x FB's, 1 x CB, 2 x Wingers (WP) & 1 x CM) & 1 server.

Defensive team with 3 outfield.

Work with the attacking team only. Attacking team try to pass into goal via FB or WP. Play starts with Server. If the defending team win possession can they clip it into the Server as quickly as possible?

- Play starts with server playing ball into CB. CB then looks to go wide to either FB or W

- Once ball is played into the channel opposite FB & WP are to come inside the channel to keep there defensive shape should the opposition win possession. Using pitch geography, the cones are placed in between the 6 & 18 yards lines.

- If attacking team are unable to play forward in the wide area they must keep possession by switching play. Either through CB or CM, who must offer support to FB and WP.

- When the ball is played "out of the channel" into CM or CB, or the FB or winger are on the line of the channel (using line between 6 & 18 yard box as pitch geography) this is the trigger for the opposite FB to pull wide and for the WP to push high and wide to allow the switch.

Key Factors

- CB & CM to create space to recieve ball on the half turn to allow a quick switch.

- Look to play switch early

- Triggers for players to react, early reaction is needed to switch play quickly and early.

- Quick combination play between units

- Variation of attack. Can the FB go direct?

- CM & CB to ensure they dont cut out a passing line for the switch.

- Type of pass, driven, lofted or through Midfield?

SSG (30 mins)

Set-up

9 v 9

Defending team (red) play a 3-3-2 formation (if defending team win possession can they play there wide players early & and when defending there opponents inside)

Attacking team (blue) play a 3-4-1 formation, as to have FB & WP to allow a switch. Coach the attacking team only.

Game begins with Attacking GK playing to CB. CB must look to play wide early.

Key Factors

- Start position of Wingers & FB, do they go high and wide when GK is in possession?

- Once ball is played wito FB or WP, do opposite FB & WP come inside the lines of the 6 & 18 yard box to retain defensive shape?

- If FB or WP are forced to either play inside or cut inside, this is the trigger for opposite FB & WP to go wide, as this will allow the switch.

- If a direct switch isnt on can we play through CB or CM? Do CB & CM create a passing line to play a direct switch? Do the CB or CM recieve on the half turn, to play wide early?

- Look to play forward early, Can we switch by playing through the striker? How do the FB & WP work together when the ball is wide? Do they create overlaps?

- End product, does opposite Winger attack the back post.

- Encourage the attacking team not to force the switch, keep possession if it is not possible.

- Quick transition from defense to attack, do FB's split & wide players push high and wide. Do players look to recieve the ball on the half turn to play forward or to switch early?

- Transition of units when play is switched.
