Hunters (10 mins)

In a group of approximately 12 players, 7 players would have a ball and the other 5 will not have a ball. On the coaches signal the “dribblers” will dribble in the grid trying to stay away from the “Hunters” who do NOT have a ball. The “Hunters” try to take a ball from the “dribblers”. If a “dirbbler’s” ball is stolen, the dribbler then instantly becomes a Hunter and the Hunter that stole the ball becomes the new dribbler. Play two or three rounds and encourage high energy from the Hunters to get to the player dribbling.

•How can the hunters be more successful?

•Do the hunters need to get to the dribbler fast or slow?

Coaching Points:

•Bend your knees, stay low, and light on your feet

•Keep your eyes on the ball

Individual Footskills (15 mins)

Every player inside a large zone, every player has a ball. Each player dribbles the ball around avoiding contact with other players. On the coach’s signal, the players perform the footskill that was demonstrated. In between signals, the players should be focused on getting frequent touches. They do not need to run extremely fast, but they should be touching the ball very frequently.

•Skills to work on: Patterns: Foundations, Top of Ball, Zig-Zag. Turning: Pullback, inside and outside Chop. Forward: Stab Push, Scissors.

1v1 to Gates (20 mins)

Set up two fields each about 15 x 20 and separate the kids into four groups (groups should be about 3 kids). Each group/team sets up at one end of the one field in a single file line (off the field to the side of the gate). Team A initiates the game by passing a ball in to team B and the first players from each line play making a 1v1 game to small gates (dribble through to score). Any time a goal is scored, the ball goes out of bounds, or the game lasts longer than 30 seconds the players on the field go off to the outside and new players begin a new game. The transition should be quick. After 10-12 games, make sure you switch so that both teams receive the ball to start. You can even rotate teams so that they play on both fields and get different competition.

•How can you defend the attacker closer to their goal?

•Close down fast or slow?

•Show me how you can direct the attacker in one direction?

•What should you always keep your eyes on when defending 1v1? The ball!

Coaching Points:

•Close down quickly then cushion

•Angle body to direct attacker one way

•Bend your knees, stay low, and light on your feet

•Keep your eyes on the ball

2v2 Outta Here (20 mins)

Play 2v2 (four gates), but when the ball goes out, a goal is scored, or time goes to long – new players for each team enter the field. Have the players initiate the game with a pass across to the other team.

•Can you close down quicker?

•How can you give the attacker less options?

•Is it better to be up tall or bending your knees and light on your feet?

•Do you need to work hard and be focused?

Coaching Points:

•Close down quickly then cushion

•Angle body to direct attacker one way

•Bend your knees, stay low, and light on your feet

•Keep your eyes on the ball
