Building out of back Passing patterns. Focus on technical ability to receive side-on as much as possible to see the field. Keeper should distribute ball using rolling balls, as well as over arm throws so players have practice receiving many different ways. Within run of play remind players of their roles in possession & movement off ball to support each other with urgency.

The Session:
6v6 Build Out Keep Away. Pitch size 44x 35 yd.
Keeper begins with ball & plays out to #4, of #5. #4 & #5 remain outside field of play but will shift & slide as ball moves across field to suppor the #2,3, 6, 8. If the #4 or 5 have ball in possission they can enter the field of play to create an overload. Blue plays out to Red #4,5 who then switch field & play back into red team who builds out & plays back to the blue #4, or 5, who then restart with keeper. 1 pts per team each time build out from back & play into opposing #4,5. Play 5 min & switch directions so red team can play out with keeper.
Coaching Points:
1) Communication
2) Slide to support - get there before you have to.
3) Check to ball @ game speed/check shoulder & know where you are going before receiving ball
4) Head up scanning field for options to play forward/backward.
5) Composure - don't panic...can you pass? dribble? play backwards?
6) Look long, see short.
7) 1st touch

The Session: 7v7
Goal & focus of the game is to work on building out of the back in different formations.
Guided Questions to ask:
Could providing more width from back line allow the midfielders to step in thru middle?
Who is providing my support as an outside back? as a center back? as a 6?
Can we use combo play to build out or could the CB step up thru the middle?
Could playing out, in, out open lanes to build out?
Allow players to play & encourage thinking outside the box & composure to build out. Allow mistakes to be made while applauding creative thinking (many times the idea is a great idea, just not technically executed well)
Progressions:
1) Play 7v7 in below formations for 20 minutes allowing each team to rotate players in on their own every 4-5 minutes.
Red Team (2004) - 1:2:3:2
Blue Team (2005) 1:3:3:1
2) 2nd set of 20 minutes have each team switch the formation they were playing to the formation the opposing team was playing...
2004 - 1:3:3:1
2005 - 1:2:3:2
