4v4+3 Rondo (25 mins)

Set Up:

  • 25x10 grid
  • 4 Green outside of the area, 4 Yellow inside, and 3 Reds, one inside and two on the ends
  • Four 4 minute rounds, 2 minute rest in between
Description
  • 4v4 game with three neutral players. Object of the game is to keep the ball for as long as possible. The team in possession stays on the outside of area and can play the neutral players in the middle or outside at any point.
  • Once ball is lost or given away, teams immediately switch positions, with the ball being able to be won again in transition.
    • Yellow wins the ball, plays a red neutral, and switches positions with Green.
    • Green is trying to win the ball immediately and presses whoever has the ball while staying inside the area.
Coaching Points
  • Reaction in transition is vital; slow transitioning attacking team will not retain possession/slow transitioning defensive team will be out of shape and won't have a cohesive press.
  • Press should be as a unit and should limit splits into the middle. Ball should travel outside the grid until press can be initiated.
  • Neutral players are always an outlet

Defending GK Press (25 mins)

Defending Goal Kick

Set Up:

  • 9v9, with one goalkeeper working at a time
  • Goal kick situation with one goal and two small goals just past halfway line.
    • White will try to build out and score in small goals
    • Green will attempt to press, win the ball, and score in the big goal.
  • 2 rounds of 10 minutes, switching sides between rounds

Description

  • This is an exercise to set the template for high pressing an opposition goal kick. Start from an opposition goal kick. Once kick is played to centerback (W4), attacking forward (G9) cuts off the angle back across the goal to the goalkeeper and opposite centerback. Once the ball is played to right back (W2), left winger (G11) immediately puts pressure on them to try and force a turnover. The rest of the team shifts towards the ball, leaving the far side White players (7, 11), condensing the space that be played through. Once the ball is won, Green should attack the goals as soon as possible.
Coaching Points

  • G9 must prevent the ball from moving across the goal without first going back or else the press will fail.
  • G11 must be close enough to W2 so they cannot play a long ball over the heads of their teammates to the far side.
  • G3 must be vocal and tell G11 which way to press.
  • G6 needs to be able to anticipate any misplayed passes and start the attack.

Risk/Reward (30 mins)

Set Up

  • 9v9, including goalkeepers
  • 70x75 yard field, split into three 25 yard sections
  • Two 15 minute rounds

Description

  • 9v9 game played as normal. Sections are important when pressing
    • Winning the ball in the opponents defensive third earns 2 extra point for a goal
    • Winning the ball in the opponents midfield third earns an extra point for a goal

Coaching Points

  • Encourage pressing as a unit on correct triggers.
    • Poor touch, backwards pass, slow pass
  • Press needs to start from front players to be most effective, but the information on when to press needs to come from midfielders/defenders
  • On the ball, work on breaking press with skip passes and 1v1 dribbling.
