5v4/4v3 w/ a divided field (30 mins)
Set Up: Split the team into two groups of 8, with one GKer in the big goal. Divide the field in half vertically. Have extra soccer balls by each goal and up the sidelines.
Instructions: Play 8v8 with one team looking to score on the small goals and the other going to the central goal.
* When the ball is on one side of the field, the only two players who can cross the middle divider are the two designated players (player 1 and player 2).
* This creates a 5v4 on the ball side.
* If the defensive team wins the ball, then they should look to switch the play to where there is an overload in their favour.
* If they can do this, they will have a 4v3 advantage.
* The designated players cannot cross the midline until their team has possession NOT when the other team has possession.
* Can either play regular stoppage rules or always play from the GKer or from one of the goals.
* After a time have the teams swtich directions.
Progressions: a) Allow any two players cross the midline to support possession. b) Allow the players to cross the midline when defending as well. c) Go to a regular 8v8 game with GKers (9v9 actually).
Coaching Points: Look to go forward wherever possible. Do not give the ball away cheaply. upon winning the ball, look to secure it and exploit the overload as quickly as possible. Quality of technique especially with passes and first touch. Movement to create space for self or teammate. Recognition of the overload.
