defensive quickness

Activity:

Player A runs dribbles towards player B. As he approaches about 2-3 yds away, player A releases the ball to player B whol dribbles at speed back in the opposite direction. Player A who made the original run must now run backwards to beat player B back to the original line. This is a continuous drill working speed and quickness both with the ball and without the ball

 

Coaching Points:

quick backwards movement

good defensive stance/body position

running backwards at speed.

Activity:

2nd player of pair plays a 2-3 yd ball infront of player A. Then makes an overlapping run behind player A and attempts to beat him to the other end. Activity repeats with other pair at the other end.

Point scored for the defender if they get to the line first.

 

Coaching Points:

Work hard to beat attacker to the line

Can you react quickly to the 1st touch of the attacker

effort and determination

Activity:

Reaction time. Defender must react to the player with the ball starting their dribble and running at speed to the line. Alternate each time up the field.

Defender scores a point if they beat player to the line

 

Coaching Points:

Reaction time

Anticipation of visual cues (kicking foot moving forward, head leaning far forward)

Activity:

4 agility and quickness stations

 

1. Running backwards at speed

2. Defensive zig zig movement backwards

3. Sprint straight, cut left, cut right, cut left, sprint straight, sprint backwards

4. Jump over cone, land with plant foot and push off quickly to left, rotate towards inner shoulder keeping body open to the cones, sprint forward to cone.

ACTIVITY:

2 players have ball in between them. From standing go in for block tackle

Progress to player 2 touch dribble before block tackle

Progress to being able to roll the ball away after the tackle

 

COACHING POINTS / KEY CONCEPTS:

Heels down/ toe up position

Lock the ankle…contract leg muscles

Shoulder over the ball

Listen for “pop”/”thud” of the ball

Weight on standing leg

2 v 2 to goal (20 mins)

ACTIVITY:

coach plays ball in. 2 players from each side come in to win ball. Defenders make decision to back off and defend. Attacking team goes to goal. Defending team tries to stop them scoring within 10 seconds to get a point. Attacking team gets a point for scoring a goal. Both teams leave the field and next 2 groups come in.

Progress to 3 v 3 if it's going well.

 

COACHING POINTS:

Transition from attack to defense in mind (patience if not going to win the ball)

Good 1 v 1 defensive technique (speed of approach, angle of approach, body shape, etc)

Provide cover for pressure defender

Communication between defenders and between defenders/GK

SET UP:

5 (+GK) vs 5 (+GK)

 

ACTIVITY:

Regular rules apply. Size of field to mimic the demands of the real game with realistic speed of movement, transition and decision making required. Players jabbing at the ball with concede a goal for their team.

As soon as one team scores, next team steps on field to defend opposite goal. Scoring team retrieves ball quickly and attacks other end of the field.

 

COACHING POINTS:

Can we show enough control and restraint to not dive in and over commit to steal the ball?

how quickly can we apply pressure to the ball?

How well are we providing cover and communicating? Verbal cues (no turn, force right/left, drop/recover, got cover, etc)

Are we able to stop penetrating passes and force the ball sideways or backwards?

Are we aware of the visual cues to steal the ball? (head down, bad touch, ball going negative
