Players dribbling in the playing area, each with a ball. When players get near another player, they change direction using different parts of the feet:

  • Inside Cut
  • Outside Cut
  • Conti (sole, in front of the body)

After the move, players accelerate into space to escape the other player.

Coaching Points:

  • Practice using both feet to change direction
  • Practice using different surfaces to change direction
  • Use an escape touch after the change of direction touch to accelerate quicker (one touch to change direction and one touch to accelerate)
  • Keep your head up while dribbling
  • Can the players get the spacing and timing right to change direction before contacting the other players?
Add Challenge:
  • Require inside, outside, or bottom of the foot to change direction each round
  • The player who changes direction the most times in one minute wins the round
  • Can the players communicate with each other to meet more players and score more points?

Two players have the ball in their hands (taggers). Taggers attempt to throw their ball and make contact with the dribbling players' balls. If their ball is tagged, dribblers must do a quick exercise before returning to play (jumping jacks, donkey kicks, etc). After one minute, nominate new taggers and play again.

Coaching Points:
  • Change direction to avoid taggers
  • Put your body between the tagger and the ball to shield the ball
  • Use disguise to trick the taggers
  • Accelerate away after changing direction to escape

1v1 to Gates

Two lines of players (attackers and defenders) with gates on the sides. Defenders serve a ball in to the attackers, who score by dribbling through either gate to score.

If the defenders win the ball, they may score by dribbling past the attackers' line.

Coaching Points:

  • Take a positive first touch toward one of the gates
  • Keep the ball close to maintain control & be able to change direction at any time
  • Change direction when the defender is near to protect the ball and evade
  • If the defender is near, use the correct foot/move to change direction and shield the ball from the defender, rather than playing in front of them
  • Accelerate after changing direction to escape the defender
  • Can the players be successful changing direction?
  • If the defenders catch on, can the players use hesitations or fake changes of direction to fool them?

Add Challenge:
  • Require one sole touch before scoring
  • Require one change of direction before scoring
  • Require one spin move before scoring

Defenders serve a ball to the attackers to start. Attackers may score on either goal (could be a cone goal). If the defender wins possession, they may dribble over the attackers' line to score. Have players or teams keep track of their score to make it more competitive.

Coaching Points:

  • Attack with speed, keeping the ball close
  • Use moves to change direction and/or trick the defender
  • Change direction to attack the open goal if one is blocked
  • Accelerate after changing direction to escape the defender
  • Defender: Position yourself to push the attacker toward the sidelines and away from the goals and their teammate.

Add Challenge: Once players are successful in 1v1, add another defender and attacker to make it 2v2. Can the teams work together to guard or attack open spaces on the field?

Split your training group into two evenly balanced teams and play regular soccer. Challenge the players to use what they practiced in training and bring those skills and concepts into the full game. Continue coaching players as they play, and feel free to freeze the game at times to show what you wish the players to see and do.

Rules:

  • Throwins from sidelines
  • No goalkeepers
  • Defensive team retreats to halfway on goal kicks
  • Kickoff in the center after every goal
