Warm Up: Rondo (10 mins)

For 10-12 Players

12x12 Grid if there are 4 players outside (left). Set up two grids side by side. You can have 6 players in this size grid. 4 players outside, a defender in the middle trying to win the ball and also an attacker who can help keep possession by being a passing option in the middle of the grid. With great success, change the attacker in the middle to another defender.

For 18-20 Players

16x16 Grid if there are 8 players outside (right). Set up two grids side by side. You can have 10 players in this size grid. 8 players outside, a defender in the middle trying to win the ball and also an attack who can help keep possession by being a passing option in the middle of the grid. High success is likely, you can change the middle attacker to a second defender.

Depending on the skill level of the players, we should try to play 3 touches maximum but preferrably 2 touches. Rotate the 'Monkey in the Middle' every 30 seconds.

Coach

Adopt a good position where you can clearly see both grids.

It is better to start the grids too big and achieve success.

Have a supply of balls ready to roll-in when a ball goes out of the grid.

You can give technical feedback to individuals as the drill is running.

If you need to stop the game, stop both games and address everyone from a good position.

Key Points

Pass with the inside of the foot

Receive with inside of the farthest foot

Shuffle along the lines as the ball travels

Provide small passing angles (get close to the the person in possession)

Activity 1: 6v2 Through Gates (10 mins)

25x25 Grid. At the mid point of each side make a 3 yard cone gate (Red). 4 attackers stay big and provide width and depth. 2 attackers occupy the middle space. 2 defenders attempy to prevent goals by working together and staying compact.

The aim is to dribble through a gate and pass to a teammate. If the defenders are covering the gates really well, you can award a point for a number of consecutive passes (maybe 5 passes).

If a defender wins the ball, they can score a point by simply passing to the other defender.

Switch roles every 2 minutes.

Key Points

Supporting movements. Check in and check out.

Don't attack a gate if the defender is blocking it.

Quality passes with the inside of the foot.

Activity 2: 3v3+6 (15 mins)

25x30 Grid. 4 Neutrals (Gray) are outisde, 2 on each end. There are also 2 neutrals in the middle to create a 5v3 on offense.

The aim is to get the ball from one side to the other. In the diagram above, Green start by attacking right to left. The ball always starts with a neutral player outisde. If Green score, both teams must quickly regain their shape and Green begins to attack now from left to right.

If Blue win the win, they must 'secure' the first pass. This means they must pass back to their neutral players on the left side and then get their shape ready to start the attack.

Coach

Note that all players are playing at different heights and in different lines (on angles). We would ideally like to get the kids to this point during the season, there is a high likelihood that you will not be able to coach this today.

If the kids are struggling to keep possession, assign each player a mark from the other team. You can only tackle your mark. Neutrals cannot be tackled but are only allowed 3 touches. Neutrals can pass to neutrals and can also score.

Encourage the players to understand priorities:

1st - Dribble into space / draw a pressure

2nd - A forward pass

3rd - A pass to the side

4th - A pass back

Key Points

Adjust speed of play - When to dribble, when to pass, where to pass

Provide passing angles

Work off the ball to be an option
