This is a beginner session for my middle school boys. I did this exact lesson on day 1 of tryouts. I think all these exercises show whether or not a player can pass, receive, and even play smart. It worked out well for me having multiple groups so I could focus on one group at a time.

This is a wall passing drill to practice passing and immediately moving. Wall passing allows players to open immediately after letting go of the ball. There will be two equal lines at two different cones parallel to each other 10 yards apart. All players on the right cone will have a ball at their feet. Their partner is the player at the other cone parallel to them. PLayer 1 will pass the ball to player 2 in front of them so they can run up to receive it. Player 2 has the option, depending on how good the pass is, to either control it before passing it or do a one-touch pass back to player 1. This will continue to the other set a cones that are 30 yards away from where they started.
Coaching Points: Players need to look up before they pass the ball. They need to know where their partner is before passing the ball. Players should be doing the drill quickly. Players must ready to receive a lousy pass and should be paying attention .

This is a warm-up drill, including passing and moving. This allows players to practice receiving the ball, looking up, and then passing the ball. There are 4 cones and the team is equally divided amongst the cones. There is one ball and player at the front of the line passes the ball to the line leader to diagonally right of them. After they pass the ball, they run to the end of the line they just passed to. The same thing continues with the other lines making a diamond shape of passes.
Coaching Points:
Players should be making crisp passes and not being sloppy. After players pass the ball off, they should sprint to the line to their right.

Exercise is right out of the 18-yard box. Coach (C) will lob a ball to their player. Players will pass themselves the ball with a header. The player will shoot using an instep drive.
Coaching points: players should head the ball toward their strongest foot. Players should pick a spot they want to shoot before receiving the ball.

Coaching Points: Players should be taking advantage of the entire space given. Players should be looking up before passing the ball, continuously moving to get open, and create spaces for passes.

Gate Passes (15 mins)
This simple drill is to lock down crisp, still passes, and practice accuracy. Two players are partners standing about 10 yards away from each other. They have two small cones in front of them as their "gate" or goal. The first player starts with three balls at their side. They will get each ball and make a crisp pass into the gate of their partner. The pattern has to receive the ball correctly. The first player kicks the other two balls, and then they rotate.
Coaching Points: The passes should be quick, and it is not meant to be a slow drill. Players need to control the ball first before they pass. They also need to look up before they pass it so they make sure they get the ball in the gate.
