Goalkeeper Wars (25 mins)

Playing against your partner, players will have a goal (cones)

about 20 yards apart from each other. To score, they must strike

the ball before theycross the half-wayline. When defending the

shot they are a goalkeeper. Once a shot is saved, the goalkeeper

puts the ball on the ground to play and has only 6 seconds to get a

shot off. Focus on proper striking technique.

•What surface should you use to strike the ball to finish?

•How can you get better accuracy?

•How can you get more power?

•What should your follow through look like?

Coaching Points:

•Strike with instep/laces (point toe down)

•Watch your foot strike the center of the ball (head steady)

•Body and striking foot at a slight angle (can’t be straight up and

down)

•Placement of non-striking foot and positioning of hips,

head/shoulders

•Follow through towards your target landing on your striking foot

2v2 Plus Goalkeeper (Large Goals) (30 mins)

separate the kids into two teams. Each team sets up at one end of

the field in two lines (off the field). Coach plays a ball in to one

team. the first player in each group will come in to play making a

2v2 game to goals. The teams are limited to defending from their

side. the player closer to the ball should pressure all the wayto the

line, and the player further from the ball can use their hands to

save the shot like a goalkeeper. When the 1st goal is scored by a

pair, theystay on and the team that took the goal jumps off. upon a

2nd consecutive goal by a group, all 4 players exit the field. if the

ball goes out of bounds the players on the field go off to the

outside and new players begin a new game. the player who

missed must return the ball to coach. Switch which team you're

playing the ball to at random.

each team has 2-3 touches depending on skill level. if they are

skilled, allow only 2, either theycan touch/hit or pass to their

teammate who strikes on goal. If they are powerful and shooting

the ball over, allow the game to continue with only one defender

while the shooter retreives his ball.

CP's

- Read flight of ball and know whether to press the player before they get the ball or to anticipate a poor first touch

- second player cheats a little higher and tighter anticipating high press and poor touches

- read cues of when to press hard and when to drop into position

- Strike the ball with the laces for power or with

2v2 Plus Goalkeeper (Large Goals) - Roll to Initiate (25 mins)

Set up one field about 25 x 30 and separate the kids into two

teams. Each team sets up at one end of the field in two lines (off

the field). Team A plays a ball in to team B (using a GK distribution

roll technique since the session's focus in on Goalkeeping) and

the first two players from each line play making a 2v2 game to

large goals with goalkeepers. Anytime a goal is scored, the ball

goes out of bounds, or the game lasts longer than 30 seconds the

players on the field go off to the outside and new players begin a

new game. The transition should be quick. After 10-12 games,

make sure you switch so that both teams receive the ball to start.

Rotate your Goalkeepers so that almost everyone gets a chance

to practice their newlylearned skills in goal.

Coaching Points:

•Proper hand positioning for catching (ball shape with a window

inside indexfingers and thumbs)

oElbows slightly bent for slight cushion

•Proper scooping technique (attack the ball, lunging motion, arms

close together and inside the lunging leg, back leg low)

•Secure the ball after scoop or catch

•Basic collapse technique – within the gk wars

•Quality of rolling or throwing distribution

Scrimmage 7v7 (15 mins)

Facilitate the game and help with positions, positioning, and game

format. Facilitate a basic scrimmage with a goalkeeper and six

field players. Allow the kids to “PLAY” but give guidance when

necessary. Use a “coaching in the game” approach to emphasize

the topics from todays training. Be sure to use the labeled names

for the positions!
