Football/Soccer Session (Moderate): Gate Tag

Gate Tag

Objective:

Work on perception and reaction in a fun, game-like environment.

Organization:

Players arrange into two teams, one on each side of the small field, 15x12 yards. Gates at the ends are 2 yards wide with a central cone. Players run at the same time around a central cone and play a game of tag. If tagged, the round is over and the next group starts.

Progression:

1) Have two attackers, 1 defender

2) Play 2v2

3) Defenders have to tag the outside of the players knee

4) Introduce a ball and play 2v2 - whereby you can only tag the one with the ball

5) Introduce tag and transition tag.

Coaching points:

1) Approach at speed

2) Use body feints to throw off the defender

3) Accelerate into space and read the defenders body shape.
