1v2 Defending & Goalkeeper - 1 Recovering Defender with Transition to Attack

Objective

A functional practice designed to improve players 1 v 2 Defending – Pressure, Recovery runs and Cover  


Organisation

  • Area 20 x 12 metres
  • 1 Yellow player (Defender) starts in the area, another Yellow player passes the ball to the Blue player nearest Yellow player comes and defends, Yellow player that played original pass must run to opposite line and then recover to help 1st Yellow player
  • Blue players score into the goal, if the Yellowplayers win the ball they can score by passing the ball into the gates to thenext Blue player, if this happens the next practice starts straight away withthe Yellow player on the side becoming the new defender and player thatnormally passes the ball must run to opposite end line. Yellow players mustkeep concentration at all times and not give any advantages
Key Factors
  • Close down quickly, but under control
  • As first Defender travels to close down Attacker – assess Attackers first touch 1. Poor 1st touch – win the ball 2.Good 1st touch delay
  • Body shape/stance – low, side on
  • Jockey, delay – be patient wait for opportunity to win the ball
  • Second Defender to recovery quickly – speed and angle of recovery then defends - press or cover
  • If ball is won Transition to Attack
  • Communication from Goalkeeper is vital

Make sure that players play till goal is scored or ball goes out of play and are aware of the Transitions
