Handling and Movement Activation (20 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • Box 3x3
  • Striking distance varies based on activity progression

Instructions/Explanations:

  • 1) Vertical movement forward for 1 touch pass at front of box; drop deep round side
  • 2) Vertical movement for 2 touch pass (same foot); drop deep round side
  • 3) Vertical movement for 2 touch pass (touch across to strike with opposite); drop deep round side
  • 4) Vertical movment- pop into 1 hand catch at front, drop for low central pick up
  • 5) Start central- lateral movement out and in for central volley then low dive
  • 6) Central high ball- recover- readjust to feeder touch and strike for low dive

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Efficient vertical and lateral movement (powerful bursts, feet light to floor, balls of feet)
  • Head up to see the picture; head still when moving and setting upon visual triggers
  • Aware of hands; able to move them quickly to effective positions

Technical Practice: Movement from wide areas (10 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • GK wearing resistance band
  • Ball positioned on 6 yard box
  • Coach at opposite side of goal with supply of balls

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK starts at X
  • On go GK drops back to defend near post area (As if winger dribbles to by line/ is played through)
  • Coach can then call 1 or 2
  • 1 GK intercepts cut back at near posts
  • 2- GK moves across goal for low dive (replicating low driven cross)
  • 8 reps

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Efficient movement
  • Strong core to balance throughout
  • Head scan to see ball and location of striker when moving across from front post
  • Set upon visual triggers
  • Technical (Lead with hands, positive shape, step and drive off correct leg)

Progression(s)

  • Add cones for power element
  • Repeat high dive

Game-Related Practice (15 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 Mannequins (Represent bodies in way from close range shot stopping)
  • 3 different colour cones in arc shape

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Coach calls a colour
  • GK on quarter turn then moves to that cone and readjusts deep to set
  • Coach strikes from close range

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Decision making (Where to set/ Technique used)
  • Feet light to floor, small readjustments to have the most effective position (use of the pulse)
  • Head still and scanning for visual triggers to set
  • Technical coaching points 

Progression(s)

  • Coach can shift ball out feet/ touch strike/ dribble before striking to force GK to readjust
  • Coach can go down the line for close range 1v1 (blocking scenario)

8 Ball Challenge (15 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 8 balls set up around 18 yard box perimeter at varying distances and angles to goal

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Gk starts on 1/4 turn
  • Coach can move to any ball when GK facing away
  • On go GK must turn and reposition in line with ball coach is at
  • Coach then strikes that ball at goal; GK re positions ready for coach to move and strike next ball
  • Work sets of 8

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Desire to keep ball out of the goal!!
  • Must see triggers and set at optimal time (even if out of position)

Progression(s)

  • Set 2: Coach can vary feeds (1/2 volley, side volley, shift ball first then strike)
  • Set 3: Add obstacles (i.e. fence ramp/ cones to cause deflections)
