Switching the point of attack will aim to create chances from wide areas away from pressure, while causing the defending team to shift create possible passing lanes and opportunities for the attacking team.

Coaching Focuses: Emphasize Communication to enhance play out of pressure, improve #7,11 getting into wide areas in attacking third to stretch the defense for passing lanes, coach #6,8 to give support and depth for switches, using layoffs and one touch passing by #9,10 for quick movement, support by backline 2,3,4,5 and goalkeeper through communication and team shape during the attack and staying connected.

Learning Objectives

Screen 1 (20 mins)

Dynamic Warm Up: 20x20 yd grids, 4 players per team and may vary depending on numbers.

Starting with no ball, lead the players through warm up with jogging, dynamic stretches, skipping, changing direction, jumping. Adding the ball for every player instruction is given on juggling, dribbling and recieving the ball out of the air and a combination of all three. Lastly only one ball is used for Red and Blue teams, players pass the ball amongst their team while avoiding collisions with opposite team's players and ball. Requires movement and communication off the ball by all players. 3 touch limit

Screen 2 (20 mins)

Activity 1: 4v4 attacking small goals in the both wide areas. 20x30 field

Intervals: 3 Work/Rest minutes: 4/3 Intensity: High

This game requires the players to identify pressure and switch the ball to the side away from pressure. Coaching points: Depth and support during the attack at goal to encourage swinging the ball side to side. Creating angles for passing lanes and multiple options, improving passing out of pressure. Communication early and often.

Screen 3 (20 mins)

Activity 2: 7v7 going at full size goals using half the field.

Intervals: 2 Work/Rest minutes: 8/4 Intensity: High

Outside lanes are created with cones and 2 flags marking half the field. Intructions: Teams must complete a pass in the outside lanes in the attacking half in order to score on goal. Goals will be worth 2 if a team is able to complete a pass in both wide channels during the attack.

Coaching points: 6/8 giving support and depth to recieve and supply balls out wide, the ball changing the lane in the attack like a car driving on the freeway to find the open lane to advance, 9/10 connecting with 7/11 through diagonal and overlapping runs to create advantages in numbers out wide. Service from 7/11 in the wide areas as well as coaching the player movement when ball is on opposite side and being switched through the middle. Communication emphasized to improve the speed of the ball switching sides.

Screen 4 (30 mins)

Game: 11v11 Full field

Intervals: 2 Work/Rest minutes: 15/4 Intensity: Moderate

Coaching Points: Adding the backline looking to create more depth, support and communication to encourage defenders to assist in switching the ball in the attacking third. 2/3 will need to stay connected with 7/11 to provide support and 2/3 look to get into attack through overlapping runs. 4/5 communicating to keep team shape during the attack. 6/8 looking to provide support centrally and recieve balls from 9/10 and relay the ball out wide controlling the tempo of the attack.7/11 using the entire field by occupying spaces along the touchline facing field.
