Practice
- General, principle based practice
- This can be adapted based on player availability, in the diagram it is 4v4 + 2 target players and a floater
- Dimensions depend on numbers, in this example I would go 36 x 22 (long and narrow to promote vertical play)
- The practice is directional, the team in possession aim to find their target man, combine with them and score in the mini goals. However to improve our understanding of the session topic, only a 3rd man runner can score in the mini goals, only a 3rd man can score.
- The target players can be either neutral players who stay on the outside ie a CF working on their hold-up play or a teammate who swaps after each game
- Only the target player(s) are allowed in the shaded areas
- 5 x 4 min games with a 90 second recovery between
- The team with the most goals at the end of each game wins
- I will be using concurrent feedback during the games and individual / Q+A feedback during the breaks
Progression(s)
- Set amount of passes = a goal if the opposition just sit off and screen the target man
- Replace the mini goals with a bigger goal and GK
- Goals scored from a first time set and finish count as 3! Why? - to promote quick, vertical play - gives the opposition less time to react / recover
- Change the practice setup slightly so the 3rd man runner has to beat a DF 1v1 or we could add a recovery DF in
- Use of other target player to recycle the ball when there is no forward passing option
Key Points
Collective
- Positioning - closest players to provide short passing options to either bate the opposition out or retain possession. Furthest players to provide depth and width to create space through, around and between the opposition
- Emphasis on purposeful, vertical possession, can we find our furthest man (target player) and support them? How?
- Supporting the furthest man, timing and exaggeration of supporting runs, create then attack and win the space
Individual
- Technical breakdown of passing, receiving and movement to get open
- Individual challenges / feedback based on observations and players IDPs
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
SSGs
- 4 team tournament, 4v4 on 1 pitch, 4v4 + GKs on the other
- 6 x 3 min games (play everyone twice, once on either pitch) with a 1 minute recovery between games
- The 4v4 pitch is 20 x 30, the 4v4 + GKs is 24 x 36. The pitches are long but narrow to encourage vertical play
- Both pitches are split into 3 x equal sized 3rds
- I will use concurrent feedback during the games, potentially Q+A and individualised challenges etc during the breaks
- 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, maybe point per goal too?
- In the first round of fixtures, the team in possession can move freely but the defending team are locked in their zones, in the second round of fixtures both teams can move freely
- Teams can score in anyway and from any zone, however a goal scored by a 3rd man run = 2 goals
Passing Practices (15 mins)
Passing Practice
- Setup and dimensions are on the diagram
- Players follow their pass, therefore the practice requires 9+ players
Progression(s)
A - Initially the practice is the same on both sides (see right hand side of the diagram)
B - Add the around the corner pass (see left hand side of the diagram) to replicate moment when we can't break the line of pressure
C - Replace the mini goal with a bigger goal and GK
Other - add a DF in front of the goal for a 1v1 / add a recovery DF
Timings - 8 x 90 second blocks with a 30 second recovery (16 minutes in total)
- Blocks 1+2 - Allow players to get used to the practice, working anti-clockwise in block 1, clock-wise in block 2
- Blocks 3+4 - Touch on any observations from blocks 1+2, working anti-clockwise in block 3, clock-wise in block 4
- Blocks 5+6 - Progression B (see above under 'Progression(s)'), working anti-clockwise in block 5, clock-wise in block 6
- Blocks 7+8 - Progression C (see above under 'Progression(s)'), working anti-clockwise in block 7, clock-wise in block 8
Key Points
- Detail of pass ie weight, disguise etc
- Timing and exaggeration of movement to get open / attack and win space
- Detail of set ie taking sting out of pass, where does teammate want to receive, are you able to play first time etc
Key Detail For 3rd Man
- In this practice, initial positioning to provide a short passing option if we are unable to play forwards
- Timing of 3rd man run to attack and win the space, go too early and the opposition may pick you up or it may be difficult to judge the set, go too late and the space or opportunity may pass by
