OBJECTIVE

To improve a teams ability to switch the point of attack through the midfield unit

WHO: #6, #8 & #10

WHAT: Switch the point to attack oppositions weak side

WHERE: Mid players - wide attacking players

WHEN: The defense in good balance, In the build up phase. When transition from defense to attack.

WHY: To effectively penetrate the weak side of the field. To help maintain possession and to create numbers up

GENERAL PRINCIPLES:

* Unbalance the opponent

* Exploit area's where the opponent is unbalanced.

TEAM PRINCIPLES

* Spread out and Triangulate to create passing options

* Create numbers up between and behind the lines

* Vary the types of runs

* Play forward when possible or keep the ball.

* Create 1v1's and 2v1 situations

TEAM TASKS:

* Keep possession while looking to unbalance the opponent

* Create good angles of support ahead of the ball, to the side of the ball and behind the ball to combine

* Make runs off the ball from inside to out and outside to in

* Provide defensive balance while in the attack

STAGE ONE: Warm up Exercise - Passing & Receiving (20 mins)

INTENSITY: Low to Moderate ACTIVITY TIME: 3 min before rotations REST: 45-60 secs INTERVALS: 4

DESCRIPTION:

* Passing drill incorporating wide players into midfield 3 and back out wide to switch the point of attack.

* Player A plays ball to player B who passes the ball into one of the players in the inner box who combine with others inside the box to pass out to player C. Player C will then pass to D and the sequence repeats in opposite direction to switch the point of attack.

Progression:

* Rotate 3 midfield players

* one of the players in the box to come out the box to receive a one two off the outside players who then passes long to a player in the box

Player Task

* Encourage players to play diagonally as if they are trying to switch the play during a game and the movement of the middle 3. Player B / D should always have at least 2 options with the other player remaining high in the box.

COACHING POINTS (use visual cues)

1. speed of play

2. shoulder check

3. #6, #8, #10 on different lines

4. Movement to recieve the pass

5. Passing accuracy, weight and pace on switching pass

* Players to complete FIFA 11+ on their arrival to practice.

STAGE 2: 3 goal game (20 mins)

INTENSITY: High ACTIVITY TIME: 3-4 min REST: 45-60 secs INTERVALS: 5

DESCRIPTION:

-Directional to small goals. Three goals for each team, one goal per third of the field.

-Teams must complete a pass in each grid before being able to score on any of their three goals.

-2 goals for wide goal, 1 goal middle goal.

-Do not allow players to cross zones

Progression:

* One player from midfield third can cross sections into outside third when their team is in possession.

Player Task:

#6, #8 & #10 to stay central, always be on different lines and triangulate

#2, #3, #7 & #11 to provide width and depth - stay in outside zones.

COACHING POINTS:

1.Speed of play - Can we quickly switch point of attack using 1 and 2 touch passes?

2. Create width to allow point of attack to change quickly.

3. Player on the ball keep the ball moving quickly while trying to unbalnce opponents.

4. Do not force play, be patient in possession and recognize oppositions weakside

5. Open body position to beable to see the field and swtich the point of attack.

STAGE 3: 3 goal game no restrictions (15 mins)

INTENSITY: high ACTIVITY TIME: 3-4 mins REST: 45-60 secs INTERVALS: 5

DESCRIPTION:

* Directional to small goals.

* Players can score in any of the 3 goals.

* No restrictions on play.

Player Task:

#6, #8 & #10 to stay central, always be on different lines and triangulate

#2, #3, #7 & #11 to provide width and depth - stay in outside zones.

COACHING POINTS:

1.Speed of play - Can we quickly switch point of attack using 1 and 2 touch passes?

2. Create width to allow point of attack to change quickly.

3. Player on the ball keep the ball moving quickly while trying to unbalnce opponents.

4. Do not force play, be patient in possession and recognize oppositions weakside

5. Open body position to beable to see the field and swtich the point of attack.

6. Player on the ball must assess level of pressure to determine if point of attack should be switched.

INTENSITY: High ACTIVITY TIME: 9 min REST: 3 mins INTERVALS: 2-3

DESCRIPTION:

* 8 v 8 game

* 1-2-3-2 both teams (as illustrated above) 

* one team to play a flat midfield 3 vs a point down midfield 3.

* Directional

* No restrictions on play.

Player Task:

#6, #8 & #10 to stay central, always be on different lines and triangulate.

#2, #3, #7 & #11 to provide width and depth, provide support on the attack.

* Have #10 playing high acting as the 3rd player in the front 3.

COACHING POINTS:

1.Speed of play - Can we quickly switch point of attack using 1 and 2 touch passes?

2. Create width to allow point of attack to change quickly.

3. Player on the ball keep the ball moving quickly while trying to unbalnce opponents.
