SAQ (10 mins)

Organization:

-13 cones. 1 area setup cones staggered 3 yards side to side, front to back. 1 area setup cones in line with 1.5 feet spacing between cones.

Instructions:

- Go twice through each time. Switch lines after each run through.

Coaching Points:

- Running the knees and light on our feet not stomping down. Balance and control of body.

Progressions:

Cone line:

(1). 2 feet in each

(2). Weave through shuffling side to side.

(3). 2 forward, 1 back through end.

(4). Around each cone figure 8s through the end.

Staggered:

(1). Side to side shuffling.

(2). Hopping 2 feet 1 forward, 1 back to the side.

(3). Hopping with control 1 cone to the next side to side (slow).

(4). Side to side but run around each cone.

Give and Go (defender committed) (15 mins)

Organization:

Approx 12 x 20 yd area 3 players. 1 ball.

Instructions:

Off of lateral touch from player on line 1, players on line 2 and 3 move accordingly as shown.

1 passes to 2, 2 passes to 3. On pass from 2, 1 closes down 3 quickly. 3 and 2 play a give and go and 3 dribbles back to where the play started.

Rotation:

1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 1.

Coaching Points:

Defender quickly close down on pass from 2nd line to 3rd line.

Player on 3rd line

- Be on toes ready to play

- Head up as ball travels in from defender to recognise the high pressure

- Pass with inside of foot closest to support

- Pass into supporting player's back foot

- Communication "through" and show hand to where you want the ball (ahead of you)

- Quick movement to receive return pass

Support player:

- Create angle at which you can receive the ball without the defender being able to intercept the pass (just off defender's shoulder). Shoulde be moving as defender moves to keep the angle open.

- Open body to see where the ball is coming from and where it is going to.

- Play pass on back foot

- Accuracy and weight of pass to play into teammate's stride

Instructions: player on line 1 slowly approach player on line 3 on pass from line 2.

Coaching Points:

Player on ball:

- Messi touches on dribble towards defender. Recognize defender cheating the pass lane.

- Commit defender - play pass as late as possible

- Dribble with foot closest to support

- Pass with pinky toe of foot closest to support

- Communication "through" and show hand to where you want the ball (ahead of you)

- Quick movement to receive return pass

Support player:

- Create angle at which you can receive the ball without the defender being able to intercept the pass (just off defender's shoulder)

- Open body to see where the ball is coming from and where it is going to.

- Play pass on back foot

- Accurcay and weight of pass to play into teammate's stride

Instructions: now defender shows that they are going to cut off the passing lane option between 3 and 2. 3 scissors to take away on their own.

Coaching Points: Progress to full pressure 2 v. 1 after 10 minutes.

Player on ball:

- First touch to drive towards defender

- Messi touches on dribble towards defender

- Commit defender - Scisiors as late as possible

- Dribble with foot closest to support

- Quality of scissors

- Bigger angled touch to beat defender to the right and accelerate after ball

Support player:

- Create angle at which you can receive the ball without the defender being able to intercept the pass (just off defender's shoulder)

- Open body to see where the ball is coming from and where it is going to.

Progressions:

- Full pressure after 10 minutes.

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

As show. 2 v 2 in the middle. Neutrals in outer channels.

3 minute games.

Instructions:

1. Use neutral players to combine to goal.

Coaching points:

(1). Separation from defender when not on the ball.

(2). Drive at the defender.

(3). Is there space in behind?

(4) Supporting the play if not on to go forward

Progressions:

(1). Add time limit.

(2). Whoever passed to the target player can enter the channel for a combination.

The game (30 mins)

Organization: Field width of the 18 yard box extending to the bottom of the circle. 2 GK or can play to pug goals with no GK. 3 teams of 4 for a tournament. Balls at center field on sideline with coach. Add neutral player if uneven numbers.

Instructions: First team to score in a 3 minute game wins and stays on. Winner gets 3 points for their team. If game tied after 3 minutes the team on longest is off. Both teams get 1 point for their team. Rules of the game in place. Throw ins, goal kick, and corner kicks on out of bounds.

Coaching Points: Use natural stoppages and individual coaching points in the flow for feedback more to allow players opportunity to show they can make decisions in possession without coach telling them what to do. Look for moments where the stop-start is applicable.

(1). Striker stretch the field for us.

(2). Wide players try to get us toward the sidelines to create gaps between defenders.
