Block 1 - Tech - circle drill

Focus: technique - locked ankle, ball on the ground, cushion, close vs. into space

Organization:

Circle split into four areas with a little area in the centre


Teams are split into two - players with the ball are on the outside of the circle.

Players without are on the inside


Players on the inside of the circle move around and perform various techniques - ensuring that they move through the central square to avoid them from going player to player.


Techniques

- receive the ball in same quadrant, pass back to same player

- receive the ball in one quadrant, pass to player in next quadrant

- receive the ball in on quadrant, pass the ball to player in opposite quadrant

- recieve the ball in different quadrant, pass the ball to player who passed it to you


Key Points

Passers

- weight of pass

- anticipation

- sence of urgency


Receivers

- first touch (tight vs. space)

- locked ankle

- head on a swivel (who is around you)

- crisp touches, locked ankles

- exaggerate your touch into space

- first control the ball, then make your pass (don't think ahead until you've got the control down pat)

Set up:

Area 30 yards x 30 Yards

Supply of Balls and Cones


Organization:

Four defenders mark four attackers. Both must stand still.

Four players move the ball swiftly inside the square exchanging passes.

Defenders change the player they are marking frequently.

Change the defenders every 3 minutes.


Progressions

Block 2 - w/ bounce players

Focus - body positioning / first touch


Set up:

15x20 or 20x30 (depending on age / stage)

smaller = harder

larger = easier (more space)


Organization:

3v3 + 1 in the middle

2 bounce players on the end by net

1 bounce player on the other end between 2 nets


Rules

Players play 3v3 in the area using the neutral to keep possession. Looking to play the ball forward to the bounce players in order to score a goal,

Limit bounce players to 2/3 touches (depending on level)


Coaching Points

Can players receive the ball with an open body to play forward?

First touch - can it be taken away from pressure or does it need to stay tight

Decision - pass vs. dribble vs. shoot after pass back from the bounce player

Block 3 - SSG

Set up:

half of the quarter pitch divided into 3 areas (Pugg nets on each end)

defending 1/3 - 3v2, middle - 2v2 + 1, attacking - 2v3


Restricted game play to channels

- normal rules apply

- keep balls close to keep game flowing if ball goes too far out, or players take too long to get ball back in


Coaching Points

- first touch (where, when, how)

- body shape (open, back foot)

- decision making (turn, use support player, into space)

- scanning (where is the defender)
