Ball Mastery Warm Up (10 mins)

Organisation

  • Players dribble in the coned area doing different skills, turns and movements, on

the coach's call, without losing the control of the ball or bumping into anyone else

  • Focus skills this block:
    • Iniesta La Croqueta
    • Outside Hook/Reverse Step Over to Outside Hook
    • Inside Hook/Sole Roll to Reverse Step Over to Inside Hook,
    • Cruyff Turn/Inside to Cruyff Turn

Progressions

  • add defenders trying to tackle the ball and give all the players five lives, every time they get tackled, or the ball goes out of play, they lose a life

Coaching Points

  • Players taking small touches
  • Players keeping their heads up
  • Players playing at high tempo
  • Encourage players to try new skills/turns/movements even if they find it difficult
  • Look out for players who are struggling with the the technique the coach has asked the player to execute

3v1 Breakout (Up Back & Through) (10 mins)

Organisation

  • Similar to the previous session, but looking to focus on the up back and through core move
  • Have flat discs to represent starting points for each player
  • The practice will always start with the same two passes shown, the initial pass into the middle player who plays a set back pass into the far play. Once the middle player has played the second pass the defender can begin to press
  • Like last week the attacking team is looking to breakout of their half for one player to score in the second half of the pitch in a 1v1 scenario
  • To start with they can dribble over the halfway line but this should quickly progress into only allowing a through ball over the halfway line for a teammate to run onto and score
  • The ideal scenario is to see an up back through, with the player who played the first pass running forward as soon as has made his first pass to be able to receive it from the furthest player who looks to play forward straight away
  • This won't always be available as an option so players will need to react to what the defender does
  • The defender may start to read what's going on so the coach should challenge them to win the ball back as quickly as possible
  • If the defender wins the ball in the first half they can score in the nearby goal
  • Rotate attackers/defenders
Progression
  • Add two defenders who's starting positions are either side of the middle player
Coaching Points
  • Have a forward-thinking mentality at all times, whether it's with their touch, passing or dribbling
  • Creating a triangular shape when in possession
  • Quality and detail of the passes to maintain possession
  • Recognise having two options when in possession of the ball
  • Recognise when the correct opportunity to breakout, doesn't have to be straight away
  • Timing of the run when doing the through ball

2v1 Variation #1 (10 mins)

Organisation

    • A 2v1 practice, but like in the previous practice the first two passes are choreographed

    • The player who starts with the ball should pass into the middle player who bounces the ball back to the initial player

    • Once that is happened the defender can go and press and it is a 2v1

    • Can only score passed the halfway line, and players aren't allowed to pass backwards

    • Rotate attackers/defenders

Progressions

  • Progression/Variation is shown on the next screen
Coaching Points
    • Don't allow players to be lazy with the bounce pass, look at angles, movement to receive and quality of the initial pass

    • Movement off the ball to create space

    • Dribble into the space created by the movement

    • Timing of passes, looking to play forward

    • If we have played forward, can we look to run forward to support our teammate

2v1 Variation #2 (10 mins)

Organisation

    • This time only the first pass is choreographed with a player (or coach) pass to either player on a side cone

    • Defender starts in the middle again, and can press as soon as the pass is made

    • It becomes a 2v1 in the second half with the two players on the side cones playing against the middle defender (player who passes the ball doesn't get involved)

    • Encourage the player who receives the ball to take the first touch forward and towards the

Progressions

  • Can play around with the starting position of the defender, maybe starting him closer to their goal
  • The person who plays the first pass joins in with the attack rather than the player on the opposite side
Coaching Points
    • Again don't allow players to be lazy with the initial pass, look at angles, movement to receive and quality of the initial pass

    • Movement off the ball to create space

    • Dribble into the space created by the movement

    • Timing of passes, looking to play forward

    • If we have played forward, can we look to run forward to support our teammate

    • First touch towards the goal

1v1s/2v2s/3v3s (20 mins)

Organisation

    • Players are split into two teams and each player has a number

    • When a player’s number is called out, they come onto the pitch and play a 1v1 against their opponent

    • Games should last 60-90 seconds each

    • Once their game is done the player should stand behind or to the side of the goal

    • Multiple games can be played at the same time (max of three games at once) – players will be challenged on awareness in this situation

Progressions

  • This can progress into doing 2v2s and 3v3s by calling out numbers (in total have a maximum of 6 players on the pitch at any time)
  • In the 2v2s/3v3s, within the first two thirds the team cannot pass backwards, in the final third its fine
  • In the 2v2s/3v3s, if a player has passed the ball from within the the first two thirds, they should move into the next third as soon as they have made their pass

Coaching Points
    • Players should try and score as close to the goal as possible in to work on their dribbling. You can add an end zone on each side of the pitch that players must score within

    • Encourage defenders to try and press/engage as soon as possible to put the attacker under pressure

    • Challenge players who are dominating by asking them to do a skill to beat their player or score/dribble with their weak foot

    • Ensure players are playing against those who are similar ability and/or physically similar – this is vital!

  • Use of this block's focus skill moves can be worth extra points
  • For the 2v2/3v3, use of this blocks core moves can be worth extra points or even a game breaker
