Pine Glen June 19th (15 mins)

Use a 20x15 area (use multiple grids if necessary) Place a single cone in the middle of the grid. The defending team will play be divided into two groups with half of the players on the opposite end line from the attacker and the other half on the same deadline as the attacker (see diagram for reference). The game is initiated by the defender on the opposite side of the grid playing the ball into the attacker and going to close down the attacker. The attacker must get past the cone in the middle before they can score. The other defender who starts on the same side as the attacker is making a recovery run to get into a position where they can cover/support the defender that initially closed down.

Players pass through the gate to score

Coaching points:

The initial defender must close down quickly. Smaller steps to remain under control as you get closer. Angle body to be more side on and in an athletic stance. Cushion so an attacker cannot run by you

When do you close down the attacker? While the ball is traveling to him/her

How can you give the attacker fewer options? Angle body to direct attacker one way

How does the second defender help? Recovery quickly/get between the ball and the goal

How should your recovery run look? Recovery run should look like a "J" run to get goalside of pressure defender in case they get beat

Where should you go once you have made your recovery run? Providing cover. Off the shoulder/hip of pressure defender but not square with the initial defender.

Pine Glen June 19th (20 mins)

Use a 40*30 grid. Play 4v4.

Encourage players to use what they have learned during the session in the game play. Make sure we praise the players when they try to implement what we worked on during the session.

Things to look for in the game at the end:

- Are players able to apply basic principles in game play of pressure/cover

- Do the players recognize that their defensive role changes based on which teammate is closest to the ball when the attackers make a pass

- Are the players able to think about where they want to force the attackers (mainly away from goal and towards the sideline in this small sided activity).
