Spotlight Game: 7+GKv7 Defensive Organization in the Midfield
50x50 (narrowed half field + 10) | full goal and end zone with target player and goals.
Blue team attacks goal, scores by scoring. | Red team scores by playing into 3-4 target goals at or just past midfield line.
Blue 6/8/10 begin attack with pass from a blue defender stationed at mid line. Blue players must make 3 consecutive passes before breaking into final third/going to goal. This will be marked as the Line of Confrontation from previous 3v3 game.
Red 6/8/10 defend the middle third (in pink pinnies) and aim to protect the Line of Confrontation with P/C/B and by cutting off passing lanes and forcing negative passing. First defender is seeking to win duel, 2nd defender covers to make play predictable, 3rd defender balances/determines the danger of a potential third attacker in the middle third. Red defensive unit supports 6/8/10 by applying central cover and flank balance. If Red team wins possession they counter attack to the small goals/connecting with their higher #9 target.
Emphasizes the decision-making ahead of the Line of Confrontation for red/pink team and defensive responsibilities of midfield 6/8/10 (in pink) during transition.

Coaching Points:
Principles of Defense for 6/8/10 (pink): Pressure // Cover // Balance.
WHO: 6/8/10 protecting back line and connecting to #9.
WHAT: Line of Confrontation = The line of the field that we don't want the ball to cross, usually just above the shooting zone or 10 yards above the penalty box.
WHEN/WHERE: When defending in middle third.
WHY: Keeping the ball in the middle third protects the defensive line and the goal. Forcing lateral/negative passes protects the Line of Confrontation and allows time to shift/transition players from weak to strong side while forcing the possessing team to make decisions.
THE BIG PICTURE: Draw a line on the field that you won't let the ball cross. Ahead of this we are forcing negative play and stepping into opportunistic balls with strong P/C/B from 6/8/10 so we can snatch up the ball and play into our own attack.
Coaching Points:
1. Close down (fast "C" run), slow down (body control and angle), sit down (low stance on balls of feet), show down (force ball and player in the direction you want).
2. Pressure should make play predictable for Cover, Balance is protecting the dangerous space.
3.The ball or the man can get past you, but never both! In this case that means if you're beat by either you must recover to protect the next most dangerous player or space.
