Skill (15 mins)

Setup
  • 3v3 + 4 Neutral Players
  • Reds play with 2 centre midfielders and an attacking centre midfielder.
  • Blues play 2 centre midfielders and a striker, looking to play behind the reds.
  • There are 2 wide neutral players playing with the team in possession and two target players at each end.

Drill

  • Blues begin with the ball from A and aim to transfer the ball to B.
  • If Blue succeed play now reverses with blue receiving from B and aiming for A.
  • If red steals, they must retain possession for 15 seconds and return to A or B to get a point.
  • Blues restart.
  • Both teams can use the wide neutral players, but they have 2 touch as do the targets.
Challenges/Conditions/Targets

Challenge:
Blues get 2 points if they can find a split pass and hit target. Blues begin to play through the reds with split passes.
Solution: Reds must stay in middle zone when blues possess in there. When it goes wide the opposite zone must be clear.
Challenge: Wide players can now pass directly to targets. Blues begin to play around the reds.
Solution: If the reds can steal the ball with all 3 midfielders are in their own half and hit the opposite target within 5 seconds = 2 points.
Challenge: Blue striker is dropping deep to receive ball in front of the midfield.
Solution: Can the reds regain possession in the opposition half and hit target for 2 points.

Coaching Points

  • Communication: distances width and depth between the 3.
  • Pressure and Cover at angles
  • Shift across quickly as ball travels
  • Be compact
  • Check shoulders to anticipate split pass in behind to striker

Small Sided Game (15 mins)

Setup
  • Red SSG 2-2-1
  • Blue SSG 1-2-2
Drill
  • Can the blue team get the ball from GK and if they can play through the shaded area before scoring they get 3 goals.
  • If reds steal, they must complete 5 passes before having a shot on goal.
Challenge: Blues just play wide and avoid the shaded area.
Solution: Blues must play through the shaded area before scoring.
Challenge: Blues get 1 goal every time they split the holding 2 centre midfielders.
Solution: The attacking centre mid must drop in line between the two out of possession.
Challenge: Blues are controlling play at the back due to being too passive. Balls are easily going over, around and through the the midfield and there is too much space behind the midfield.
Solution: Reds get 3 goals if they can steal in opposition half and score within 5 seconds. They also get 1 goal if the back 2 catch blue offside.

Coaching Points
  • Distances width and depth between midfield
  • Communication from back to mid. Are they in position able to intercept the split pass?
  • Pressure: as the ball travels get tight
  • Decision making: To tackle or jockey once tight
  • Quality of opposition: be compact and reduce space if so / if not press high and hold high line
  • Once in possession, can we be brave? Move ball quickly on counter.
