Activation Drills (15 mins)

Key Factors - All 3 drills concentrate on conditioning. Drills 2 & 3 include ball work.

Organisation - 20 Player setup. 5 Players in drill 1 & 3 and 10 players in drill 2. Interchange th eplayers in groups of 5 between drills to ensure they get even amount of tim ein each drill (5 minute intervals). 20 minutes on this circuit. Progression from drill 1 > 2 (in square) > 2 (outside square) > 3. All three drills can accomodate more than the number of players shown.

Drill 1 - Player starts by going through ladder, then alternate 1 foot hops/lunges to the flat disks. Over the hurdles followed by 60% sprint round first 2 poles and then 100% sprint back home.

Drill 2 - Players on the outside of the square run around at 60% speed. Players on inside move 3 balls between the 5 of them, finding space and dribbling/passing.

Drill 3 - Figure of 8 passing drill startingh from outside corner. Middle player acts as a pivot player moving the ball around the 8. When outside players pass into centre they go to the corner adjacent to them over the obstacles. When passing along the edge of the rectangle they follow their pass.

Combinations/Partnerships (20 mins)

Key Factors

Simple passing drill in specific groups of 4, progressing to 4v2 and then 4v3.

Encourage possession/defending patterns on the pitch in matches.

Repetitive practise of passing/retaining possession between certain groups of players.

Organisation

It is essential that the player groups are well thought out with consideration to the position players will be playing on the pitch (see formation example).

For example; the numbered players in the formation grid could make up the four players in possession.

Penetration & Finishing (30 mins)

Key Factors

This works on keeping posession/passing in tight areas and "breaking the lines".

Neutral players on the outside that can be used by whichever team has the ball.

The outside players are 2 touch only.

The 2 inside teams are attacking a goal each. The numbered players (1&2) that are outside the square can take a shot at the golas but only when 6 passes have been completed by the teams in the middle.

Shooting players still only have 2 touches to shoot/play the other player in on goal.

If there are not enough shooting opportunities then teams can attack both goals.

Organisation

Teams swap every 3 minutes. there should be 6 "games" in total so each team plays each other twice.

Try to arrange players dependant on their positions.

Encourage pass and move into space to vacate that area for another player.

Continual movement is neccesary.

Encourage communication. It is designed to help players make decisions under pressure.

This drill is important to encourage teams to retain possession and move the ball around more.

Forcing the teams to make 6 passes before trying to create a goalscoring ooportunity is important.

Formation

Vital positions are the wide players, both forward and midfield.

Wide midfielders will have big responsibility to get forward and also back to make a back 5 when out of possession.

Forward "wide" players will need to investigate space and make themselves difficult to markwhen team is in possession but will also have to make up at least a 3 man, if not a 4 man midfield out of possession when the wide midfielders make up a back 5.

2 centre midfielders will have to be very disciplined and mobile.

Central striker will have to keep defenders guessing, including dropping into a false 9 to allow either or both of the attacking midfielders to run beyond him.
