Description

Sister session showing the overlapping full back. Uses the diamond routines to bed in (can also revise the one coached last session). Finishes with a longer conditioned game, rather than a GRP where several players not involved, where we look for coaching opportunities especially to recognise the phases, and the chances to play the wide man in rather than going direct. Pass length limited to 20m to force the extra pass rather than the direct approach.

Diamond overlap FB (15 mins)

This pattern allows the full back A(E) to overlap and deliver one of the3 final balls:

1. Near post - striker

2. Cut back - midfielder

3. Back post/shot - opposite wide player.

Point out the phases of play here Phase 1 sets up the pass into the full back.

Phase 2 is the real attacking move.

Starting positions as above - striker at head of the diamond but starts central.

Move initiated by the wide player B(F) dropping deeper and inside to receive pass from full back A(E). Midfielder D also drops to provide an angle for Bs pass as A overlaps.

NOTE - B is now the deepest player providing support.

*movement of D to check in and out to make space for pass

*timing of runs to meet passes

*movement to retain balance

Rotation, alternate sides : Full back>winger, winger>midfielder, midfielder>striker, striker>ball>q

Overlap FB with defs (15 mins)

Add 2 defenders from other group X and Y.

Target for reds is to get the ball to the overlapping full back - this may involve more passes than the basic pattern but goals only count if FB plays the final ball.

X challenges B on receipt as 1st defender - now Bs ability to hold ball and pass under pressure gives A time to overlap.

*Striker Cs run must be tracked by Y - realistic as would push up defensive line.

*Y must be composed and act as 1st defender once X is beaten and is recovering.

*Ds movement is crucial in opening his passing channel to the wide player

*C remains deeper as B provides initial support for attack

Rotation same as drill but defenders move across.

Progress by adding another defender and allowing more freedom for defenders whilst maintaining good principles and re-enforcing offside rule.

IF struggling to get FB forward quick enough the option is for D to play into striker at corner of box who sets back for D to then play wide.

Conditioned game (15 mins)

Attacking team reds 3-2-3, or 3-3-3 if extra.

Defending team 3-2-3

Conditions

1. Must get FB fwd to deliver final ball.

2. No passes longer than 20m

3. Strikers must stay long.

*maintining width on both sides when in possession

*striker movement and timing

*weight and accuracy of passes

*wide player responsibility when full back forward

Look for situations for stoppages when diamond evident and when passing angles too flat OR when full back/winger is too narrow.

Progress by going to a back 4 for one team.

Progress again by allowing winger or full back to deliver final ball.
