Description

In this session have the players attacking towards goals however when the defender wins the ball really focus on the speed in which they counter up the field. It's important we develop the players understanding of why we attack at speed when we first win the ball especially if there is wide open space to attack.

Coaching Points: Decision making, Speed of play, bigger touches into space.

Criss Cross (15 mins)

We have the reds moving around looking for space however if they can dribble between two blue players without making contact with them they can score a point. Aim is for the players to be aware of their surroundings and not just look down at the ball.

Progression: Blues can now communicate and close the gaps to avoid points being scored however cannot just stand side by side (5 yard gaps minimum)

Gates (20 mins)

In this stage have the players set-up in 1v1 boxes where they can score by stopping on the endline for 1 point or pass into the mini goal for 2 points. This game will encourage the defender to get inline with the goal to prevent the attacker shooting however the attacker should look to change direction quickly (shifting the ball) to create an oppurtunity to pass/shoot into the goal. Now the players have some risk against reward, can they pass accurately into the games for 2 points or is it easier to drive onto the end line. This decision making is healthy for these players to work out.

Players need to make a decision once they beat the defender, are they able to dribble to the end line for an easy point or is it possible to pass/shoot into the mini goals? Will the defender catch them?

Progression 1: Ladder system where winners move up losers go down.

Dribble & Score (20 mins)

In this stage we have a 1v1 towards goal with an endzone that the defender cannot enter! If the player can beat the defender in the field and dribble into the end zone they're able to shoot on goal. You can add goalkeepers to make it more realistic.

No more than 2 in a line waiting for a turn, you can set this game up multiple times to accomadate larger numbers - Repitition is key.

Progression 1: Defenders switch after every tackle however score two points if they successfully drive all the way back to the start line. (Encourage players to counter attack as much as possible)

Scrimmage (30 mins)

In this stage have the players in small sided games however once again work on their decision making, see in the diagram how the white is dribbling into pressure and losing the ball. Once the blues have possession they're making a quick decision to drive into the space before the whites can get themselves back behind the ball.

Explain to the players, if this process it too long the whites will get back on defense and make it more difficult to score.
