Warm up (15 mins)

Shooting Warm Up

Organization

-Area 25x25yds, with two goals as illustrated.

-14 Players (incl. 2GK’s), with players arranged in 2 teams of 6. GK's should be coaches to help the flow.

Description

- Each player has has the ball and uses different parts of the foot to dribble towards either goal. When in the shooting area, player should aim for the goalkeeper practicing accuracy and different foot area. The shooting power should be at 30-50%

- Once the shot is made, the player runs to either left or right corner and open up to receive the ball, after which he/she will go to the opposite goal

- The pace of player run is 30-50%

- While dribbling, players should be encouraged to try different moves and feints.

Details

- Early decision to shoot from distance or move nearer to goal before the strike.

- Smart opening run to receive the ball

- Timing and accuracy of strike as multiple players are going at the same time

- Looking for finishing rebounds.

Progression

- Coach can stop every minute or so and do ball mastery

- Increase the running tempo/intensity

- Increase the strike power as players warm up

- Go from inside of the foot to laces only

- Bring 3 Ds into area (1 from front, 2 from side) to increase intensity

Key Coaching Points

- Head is up to assess the goalie preparedness and positioning of other players

- Weight on the ball should be at full control

- Body positioning when opening for ball from the goalie

- Assess position of GK

Shooting and defending (20 mins)

Shooting & Defending

Organization

-Area 25x25yds, with 5yd channel across full with marked with ones and goals t each end, set out as illustrated.

-14 Players (incl. 2GK’s), with outfield players arranged in 2 teams of 6. GK's can be coaches to help the flow.

-Each team has 2 Attackers & 4 Defenders.

-10 balls (5 balls for each team), move to collect a ball from the central area.

-On collection: D moves from edge of area to defend (making 2v1).

-Once attack has concluded: 2A’s collect 2nd ball and new D enters area to combat.

-A’s have 5 attacks, with different D’s against each attack.

-Practice is mirrored in other half of practice area.

-Players rotate roles and repeat practice.

-Early decision to shoot from distance or move nearer to goal before the strike.

-Moving quickly but under control when moving forward.

-Timing and accuracy of pass to other attacker.

-How to beat the GK (techniques to use).

-Looking for finishing rebounds.

Progression

- Coach may vary overload (A/D ratio) depending on level of ability of individual players.

- Allow 2nd D to enter.

- Bring 3 Ds into area (1 from front, 2 from side) to increase intensity

Key Coaching Points

-A’s scan to assess position and movement of D

-Quickly move into goal-scoring range

-Evaluate which A is best position to score and either take shot or pass.

-Look to eliminate D with individual skill move or clever movement off ball

-Assess position of GK

U9’s – The players should be able to complete the Learning outcomes under passive pressure.

U10’s – The players should be able to complete the Learning outcomes at pace, under passive pressure.

Individual and Combined Finishing 2 (25 mins)

Individual Shooting and Defending

Organization

Half pitch (working around penalty area) with full goal, as illustrated.

- 7 players (incl. GK), with outfield players working in pairs as Attackers (A), Defenders (D) & Servers (S)

- Supply of balls with a goalie

- Attackers’ start width of goal apart, in line with penalty spot, inside area.

- 2D’s start 8-10y ds outside penalty area.

- Practice starts with: ball is fed diagonally from GK to D1, who moves

towards ball to receive, turn pass to S.

- Immediately: a S feeds a ball for A1

to attack & finish on goal.

• Practice continues; alternating S & A’s and D's

• After pre-determined number of attempts: players rotate roles.

Details

- Where possible: A should strike on goal with minimum number of touches, unless player decides to take ball into 1v1 with GK.

- Ability to use body feints & disguise of intended strike before

contacting ball to possibly unbalance GK.

- Composure, accuracy & power are of paramount importance.

Progressions

- Vary nature of service (aerial, heavy weight, swerve etc).

• Always allow GK to recover after 2 strikes from A1 & A2 before next

attempts at goal.

Key coaching points

• Movement of A making angle to receive & strike on goal.

• Look over inside shoulder whilst moving to receive, adjusting body

shape accordingly.

• 1st touch excellence to set-up opportunity to strike at goal.

• 1st touch may be strike on goal.

• Observe (if possible) position & movement of GK.

• Decide technique to employ to beat GK with strike.

• Execute contact with precision.
